-----------------------------------------------------------[/i] Code BlueHe’d woken up early this morning, and he knew something wasn’t right to begin with. Something he couldn’t explain however. And then he realized as his body shuddered and he coughed so hard he was sure blood was to follow from his throat. Horatio Caine was sick – Horatio Caine, did not get sick. He shifted as he sat upright and rubbed his throbbing head. He was afraid to turn a light on. He tried to move but he realized his body wasn’t working normally either. For some reason he couldn’t find the strength to get up. Finally after a few moments of struggling he stood upright, and shook as he did so. He slowly staggered to the bathroom and turned the light on in there – stood in front of his mirror and stare into the eyes of a man he did not recognize. His face was pale, his eyes distant. He looked like he’d just been awoken from the dead. And for a split second he wondered if he had died. Horatio shifted, and just stare for another few moments. He went to speak to – Marisol, whom in the morning before work he did talk to every now and then, as well as his brother. He went into a coughing fit instead, and that was when the blood he’d feared came forward and spew across his sink. He wondered where it had come from – his lungs where exhausted as it where, and he was having trouble breathing. He went to sit back down on his bed, and when he attempted to sit, his rump fell to the ground instead. Sigh he did as he inhale and then go into another coughing fit- doubled over where he sit and fall onto his side wrapping his arms around his chest, as if he was trying to alleviate the pain by holding himself tight. He wondered where he’d gotten whatever he’d gotten, he’d not been around anyone who was sick, and crime-scenes where crime-scenes. He slowly staggered upright, after laying for almost five minutes, and was able to walk a little better. He strode – grabbed his keys and went outside.. hoping the fresh air would help him. He went out to the department issued hummer - sat behind the wheel. Went into another coughing fit and slammed his head on the steering wheel, what luck. He needed to get somewhere. Wondered if for once in his life he should go to the doctor. He shook his head, and realized for once he’d be going in for himself and not someone else. Horatio started the hummer he let it idle for a few moments. He wondered if he’d be able to pull himself together enough to make it to the hospital. He pulled the hummer into gear, and started to drive. It was a fair distance from his home to the hospital and about thirty minutes later he arrived. Parked the hummer in the ambulance landing and left it running. He’d never brought himself in a hospital – memories flashed of his past in his proverbial. That night, he’d been assaulted, and murdered his father. That was the only other time he’d been able to bring himself into the hospital. He’d done it for himself. And ran into the police on the way.. He shifted as he walked and pushed those thoughts aside. He was still coughing up blood as he walked inside. It looked almost as if he’d been shot. He’d not even bothered getting dressed. Left in his pajama’s and made his way through the door, weakly. He thought for a moment what he would say – He walked up to the counter and stood signing his name. Suddenly and without warning he collapsed. Slammed his head on the tile floor, and was out cold. He woke up about an hour later. Laying in a hospital bed with an IV in his arm and a tube down his throat- just as a precaution. The nurse noticed he was awake and told him they would be removing the tube. They did, and his throat hurt more than it had ever hurt before. The doctor was an older woman, mid forties – she was taller than him, long brown locks and hazel eyes. She looked on at her patient. “Mr. Caine.” She said lightly. “We ran some tests while you where out, and it looks as if you where poisoned. We don’t know by what yet but we want to keep you in here for observation.” She looked at him with a grim look. “Your lucky you came in when you did, sir. Or you’d be laying in a morgue right now.” Horatio shifted where he lay and shake his head. Posioned. he thought – and all sorts of questions ran through his mind. He would call Alexx later – he spoke with dissolving voice. “Posioned.” was all he said for a moment. Horatio’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Lieutenant.” He said in a whisper. He realized she knew who he was from his ID that he had in his wallet. The mark on his drivers license. He sighed and turned onto his side. Doctor Heming looked at him, Lieutenant Caine in the flesh. She’d seen him walking in and out every now and then but that was it. But now he was one of her patients and she was going to make sure she helped him as much as she could. She stood just listening to him talk. “Lieutenant – Sir. We don’t know what kind of poison it is, we’re running the blood tests now, but we need you to stay in the hospital.” Horatio hated hospitals. Hated them with a passion – the only time he’d been brought into one himself was after the abuse, and sexual assaults, his mother would bring him here, to get evidence on his father. And that was it. He’d break bones and they didn’t care, he’d been stabbed badly in New York and he had been brought unconscious. But this was the first time in a long time he’d been in a hospital and he was hating every second of it. Horatio’s eyes closed and then opened. “Ma’am Miami needs me.” Doctor Heming looked at him again and shook her head. “You’ll be alright for a few hours away from your job- Lieutenant.” Horatio snorted and that put him into another coughing fit, and this time he’d coughed up more blood than before. Doctor Heming ran into action, noticing that he was having trouble breathing. “Lieutenant deep breaths.. take deep breaths” but it was to no avail. “Nurse! I need a code two we’re losing him!” Horatio’s body shuddered and then there was nothing. He lay limp. Doctor Heming kept trying CPR on him. Waiting for the paddles, and when they arrived she sprung into action again.. shocking his chest. “Nurse, Adavant now!” she yelled, she’d be d**ned if Horatio Caine died on her watch. She watched as his body retched and pulled upward and then fell back down. “Three, Two, One Clear!” she pushed the paddles to his chest again… nothing..

This looks serious. There are enough people out there who want to poison him, if given a chance Sandra

Interesting. My only question is this: Will this remain a WIP or will it reach closure? I hope you see it through to the end. It could turn out to be an intriguing story. em

OMG, what a beginning. I am on the edge of my seat right now. I feel so helpless. So which one of Horatio's enemies got to him? Hopefully you will continue this story, you are doing a great job.

Alright guys its time for Chapter Two! You ready, its only just starting to get hot! ---------------------------------------------------------
Chapter Two: Momentary Time Lapse
It had been a few hours since Horatio had gone into cardiac arrest and now he was laying on a breathing tube because his lungs weren’t working for him. Doctors had been in and out of his room all day making sure that they didn’t lose him. Doctor Heming had stayed with him instead of go help other people who needed her, which was against protocol but she didn’t care. Horatio Caine’s life hung in the balance. She was worried that when he brought himself in they’d missed something big. The tests still hadn’t come back, and she figured she’d go check on those. “Horatio, I’ll be right back.” She said, and then walked out of the room. She walked down to the lab, and ran into one of her Tecs. “Missy, Has the poison test come back on Horatio Caine yet?” She asked looking down at the papers on the desk in front of her. Missy was shorter than Heming, a little, she was younger by a long shot, smarter she thought. “Miss, They came in, and some man came and took them, said that it was important. That I couldn’t hold onto them.” She explained. Doctor Heming looked at her and stuck her head to the side. “Man.. did he give you his name?” Missy looked at her for a second and then looked away. “No – I didn’t ask.” She said, she knew the severity of what she’d done. Doctor Heming tapped her foot idly on the ground, and snorted. “You do realize that there are people who want to kill Lieutenant Caine, and you probably just aided them in doing so. He’ll die if we don’t know what is making him so sick.” She said and walked away. She wasn’t going to let this go. Ryan Wolfe had received the call first that Horatio was in the hospital – Was on his way there as he told Eric and Calliegh both not to worry about him. The only reason that they had called him was- for some reason Horatio had made him, his next of kin. He didn’t know why, when Eric was actually his next of kin but, Ryan kind of liked the idea of it. He sat behind the wheel driving another department issue hummer to park behind the one already sitting in the ambulance bay. They hadn’t moved it. He knew why- Doctor Heming ran into Ryan in the hallway. She was taller than him as well. “You must be Ryan Wolfe.” She said and nodded her head lightly. She’d also seen him here every now and then. Ryan nodded back – “What happened with the blood report.. I heard its been lost..?” he asked and for a split second his own words dredged up anger. Doctor Heming sighed, and looked at him. “It appears someone came and collected it. A man whom didn’t give his ID but told my Lab Tec he had clearance.” Ryan looked at her and narrowed his eyes, he knew of one person. Rick Stetler. He pulled out his phone and looked at Doctor Heming. “I’ll get to the bottom of this.” He said with a fake smile. Dialed Rick Stetlers number hoping he would answer. “Rick Stetler” he answered. Ryan cleared his head and tried to remain professional. “Rick, Sir. Did you come and take the blood report on Horatio Caine?” he asked. Rick took a deep breath. “No, Mister Wolfe I did not. Nor Has IAB been informed of his condition at this time.” Ryan tapped his foot and looked at Doctor Heming. “So you witch hunters aint got it?” he asked again. Rick sighed, “No we don’t.” Ryan just hung the phone up – “Internal Affairs doesn’t have it. That means someone came and pretended to be IAB.” He walked away from Doctor Heming without saying another word. Went to the lab where Missy was. Missy was still trying to sift through papers wondering if she’d misplaced it. “H—Hello.” She said as she watched Ryan walk in and saw his silver shield. Ryan looked at her his shoulders strait, his eyes narrow. “Miss, I need to know what you did with that paper.” His words where cold and condescending. Missy looked at him –tried to find the words to explain to him what had happened. “I—A man came and told me that he needed it. He didn’t flash a badge or anything, he looked like one of you guys.” She said and her voice began to shake. She idly put her hand to her mouth. Ryan sighed, and mentally took note of the papers on the desks. “Yeah, well – Now someone has the information on Lieutenant Caine, and now they know how and what they need to kill him.” He was annoyed and angry that they had let this happen so easily.
Ryan’s next stop was to see Horatio, He’d call about the report later, now he needed to spend time with Horatio. He slowly walked down to the room where they had directed him. Ryan slowly slid the door open and looked at the man whom he looked up to as a father, tied down to every machine known to man.
“H..Horatio.” he said his name, and for the first time in his life, his voice shook as well as his body. “I – I – I’m here.” He said. Ryan walked up to his side, and grabbed Horatio’s hand, and interlaced his with it. “I- I – I’m here.” He said it again. The shape Horatio was in was amazing to the Analyst. He looked almost as though he’d aged twenty years, and was dead on top of it. He didn’t look like the man Ryan knew. Loved.
Ryan was worried more now than he’d ever been for anyone’s life. He wondered now why Horatio had put him as his next of kin. Would looking at him like this be to hard on Eric?
Doctor Heming walked passed Horatio’s room, and saw Ryan sitting with him. She didn’t want to intrude but she had some news to break to them. She slowly slid the door open and noticed how Ryan didn’t even turn around, he’d kept his gaze on the man laying – clinging onto life. “Ryan” she said her voice light. Quiet. “We have a descript---“
Ryan cut her off. “Not here.” Was all he said. He couldn’t take his eyes off of Horatio. They where locked there. “Get out.” He said the words cold, and heartless. He was going to solve this without Horatio knowing what was going on.
Doctor Heming said nothing more, and left.. Worried for both of their mental states.

OMG, So deep. Great Chapter. So now they have a description, that is atleast a start. I still surprised that the others didn't rush over to see Horatio anyway. So I wonder why Ryan is listed as next of kin? Maybe with Marisol's death and Delko's injuries, he felt Eric couldn't handle it. I guess we will certainly find out. Sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for the next chapter.

this is a great start! im just can't imagine horatio in that state but i suppose thats probably because i've never seen him in that sort of state before! with regards to ryan being next of kin, that seems a bit strange but like everyone else said, eric probably wouldn't be able to handle seeing horatio like that so i think ryan would have been a good choice. what i want to know is, who took the blood results??? we will have to wait and see! luv sam x

UPDATED AGAIN! I just had this strike me so I had to type it out! Here you go! ----------------------------------------------
Chapter Three: Heartbreaking Revelation
Ryan was still in the room with Horatio. Although his head had migrated to the Lieutenant’s chest, and he was asleep he was still in the room. Ryan felt the obligation to be more like a body guard than – next of kin.
Doctor Heming walked in the room after arguing with herself – She saw Ryan asleep and knew her presence would awaken him. “Ryan Wolfe..” she said his whole name because formality failed her. “We got some other test results back.”
Ryan looked at her like he’d never seen her before, and then he was awake in that same moment. “T – Test results?” he asked . Curious.
Doctor Heming looked at him. “As his Medical Proxy I have to notify you of any wounds or conditions we find.” She said, and then begun to explain. “There are old wounds, we found – from what looks to be a very violent child hood. Broken bones as well, his ribs look like they’ve been broken more than five times. But the interesting of all was the wounds to his – well” she looked away for a moment. Feeling awkward.
Ryan just listened – and then it all became clear to him. Why Horatio had made him his Medical Proxy, and next of kin. His past. Ryan’s brain was hammering between his temples but he didn’t show it. “Oh..?” he asked wanting to know more.
Doctor Heming just nodded knowing where she was directing her attention to was not lost on him. “Yes, there is history of abuse, and sexual assault.” She said. “And scars that seem to have not faded on him.”
Ryan’s eyes got wide, and his body shuddered. Horatio Caine, sexually assaulted.. as a kid – Ryan shook his head, he didn’t want to believe it. Was that why he was so afraid of relationships, so afraid of other people to get close to him.. Ryan’s brain started to hammer harder.
Doctor Heming gave him a few moments to allow it to all sink in. “The wounds we found, on the external exam, showed years and years of abuse, Ryan.” She said, watching that look of pure shock overwhelm him.
Ryan just stood, paced for a moment, and stopped – looking away from where Horatio lay. Why was he shocked, he wondered, why for the first time was he afraid of the man he looked up to-
Doctor Heming looked at him and walked to his side. “Detective, It doesn’t change who he is. This is all from the past, the things that shape who you are. He’s no different than he was before he was hurt – now its your job, your job to find out who did this to him.” She put her hand on his shoulder lightly.
Ryan shook a little as she touched him, and now, he was sure he knew why Horatio had made him his proxy. He sighed as he stood, she was right, indeed, right that he had to search – hunt down the man who’d done this. Ryan had known about Horatio having to murder his father, but he’d never known why, aside from the fact that he’d killed his mother. But now he knew why New York wanted to prosecute him – the same time he’d been shot with the nail gun, and Ryan realized that Horatio had so much more going on than anyone ever could imagine.
Doctor Heming walked out of the room to leave Ryan alone with Horatio. She had other paitents who needed her as well. She went to them.
Ryan turned around to face Horatio, what was left of him. Years of abuse, had not been seen in the man he knew. He knew Horatio had talked about it a little with everyone, but years and years, he’d not mentioned that. Horatio he realized had – had it worse than anyone they’d ever ran into. The events that had happened in his life could never amount to any victim that he’d meet in his career.
Ryan sat back down at Horatio’s side. “Horatio.. I’m so sorry.” He said, apologizing for a past he wouldn’t have been alive to prevent. “I didn’t.. know.” He sighed and shifted his weight. “I wont tell anyone else.. I promise.” He knew how Horatio was about people knowing his past, knowing the man behind the gold shield. ---------------------------------------------------
Horatio was alive. There was no doubting that even if he was having problems breathing now, he would be alive in the end. He had promised himself that. If it wasn’t the truth then god help him he make sure the one who killed him was found. But that was kind of hard to do, unconscious and on a breathing tube. -------------------------------
Ryan lay his head on Horatio’s chest again. This time looking at him with a different set of eyes. More caring than ever. More love than he’d ever felt for another human being in his life. He was like a son to Horatio, and that, was how it would stay. It was his turn now, to find the man responsible for trying to kill him. Just as he had for Ryan. Ryan rest his head lightly on Horatio’s chest. Close his eyes.. and drift off to sleep.

Great chapter, very emotional. Poor Horatio, I know Ryan would never say anything to anyone. So, now the team has to find out who is behind this. They have a description, let's go team, let's do this for Horatio.
