Chapter Four: Resurrection
Ryan Wolfe was still at Horatio’s side when he felt something. Curious he waited a beat, and wanted to see if he could feel it again… There it was, Horatio had moved his hand. Ryan wondered if he was trying to tell him he was still alive. “Horatio.. Hey.. I felt that..” he said, and smiled. There it was again- Ryan was almost jumping with joy. But he kept his professionalism with him.
Eric Delko walked into the hospital after getting the call from Ryan that Horatio had been hospitalized, and because he was working a case, he was unable to come right away. But now he was trying to find Horatio’s room. He found it and stood outside seeing Ryan beside his brother in –law. And accusation ran in his features. He slowly pulled the door open instead of letting it open for him. “Ryan.. why where you here before all of us?” he asked. Ryan looked up and narrowed his eyes. He was the youngest of the team and still had that childish pizzazz about him. “I uhm.. Horatio – uhm… He had my card on him, when he brought himself in and collapsed.” He lied – He hated being put in the spotlight like this. Eric moved a little closer, afraid to touch Horatio for he might crumble to pieces. Last time he’d touched anyone in the hospital it was Marisol, and she was dead. “Your card.. why would he have your card and not anyone elses..” Eric’s voice and eyes showed more anger and pain than he could ever fathom himself.
Ryan looked at Horatio and then back at Eric. “Because I just got them remade, they had the wrong number on them, and I wanted to make absolutely sure Horatio had a new copy.” He lied again. He was on a streak now. He hated lying to someone who may one day – or already have saved his life.
Eric moved closer to Horatio. Grabbed his hand, and held onto it. Said nothing for a moment, two. “He made you his Medical Proxy didn’t he.” It shot out of the dark- obliterating the silence.
Ryan looked back and forth afraid to answer. He’d rather him find out from Horatio himself, than him right now. He was afraid how he would react. “Y- yes..” he said and turned to face him. “I- I didn’t ask to be – It – It just happened.” He said. And lowered his gaze.
Eric looked at him, and then at Horatio. “I knew it.” He said. His eyes went grim, and he stepped away from his brother –in law. “I knew it.” Pain came across his visage as well, and he just stood in silence.
Ryan looked at him and stood at his side. He hated seeing pain in victims in people, it made him want to curl into a ball and sob himself and he realized how hurt Eric had to have been the moment he figured it out, and it panged his heart. “He did it to protect you.” Ryan started. “I found out things about the Horatio Caine – I know, the Horatio Caine- You know, they know.. that no one knows.. things no one should know. And he made me his Medical Proxy probably – so that that wouldn’t be put on you. The things I know, no one should know Eric.” He wasn’t going to tell him, no matter how badly beaten he got from Eric – if he chose to attack him, which that was the vibe he was getting at the moment.
Eric paced for a moment, two and then stopped. “Then take care of him.” He said, and without another word walked out of the room. Emotions where running hard in his system and he just couldn’t take it.
Ryan watched him leave. Wanted to tell him he wasn’t being fair to Horatio, but then who had started it. Horatio. And Ryan just stood and shrugged his shoulders. He knew who Eric was going to go to, Calliegh and with that new romance they’d found themselves in, she would probably side with him, instead of Horatio. And suddenly Ryan felt like a one man army. “Horatio why didn’t you just make Eric your Medical Proxy.” He said out loud. “He was already left out when you decided to go under ground.” He shook his head. This was happening for a reason, and only Horatio Caine knew what it was.
Doctor Heming was making her rounds, and walked back down to Horatio’s room, noted the police protection outside- and had to flash her ID to get inside. “Ryan, your still here.” She said as she walked in. Ryan didn’t even bother to look up. “He – He moved his hand a little” was all he said.
Doctor Heming looked at him. “That’s great.. It means he’s still there.” She said and smiled. But she could feel, something wasn’t right in the room, although not entitled to find the answer, she decided it was best not to ask.
Ryan looked at her. “Is it? Is it great that he destroyed his own brother in law?” Ryan regretted the words the moment they came out of his mouth.
Doctor Heming realized what he meant. “He had his own reasons, that’s all we can say for now, maybe, he’ll explain. If he explains everything will work out.” She said, and touched his shoulder again.
Ryan just looked back at Horatio. “You better have an good reason for all of this.” He said, and grabbed his hand.
Doctor Heming picked up Horatio’s chart and marked that he was showing a little improvement. And then left without saying another word. Ryan walked around and to Horatio’s side, and took up his hand, this time testing something of his own theory. He put Horatio’s hand in a sort of handshake position and interlaced his fingers around his hand. Then, he leaned close to Horatio’s head and murmured. “If your there squeeze my hand.” He waited.. Nothing. “Horatio, come on, I know you can do it. Squeeze my hand, as hard as you can” he waited.. still nothing. Ryan shifted his weight from one foot to the other and stood there. “Come on Horatio.. please..” he was pleading with him now… --- Horatio Caine was not dead, he could hear all of the chatter around him. Everyone talking about what he’d done, the pain he’d heard in Eric’s voice. He knew he was going to have a lot of explaining to do. His mind was ready to surface again, but his body wasn’t. And when he heard Ryan tell him to squeeze his hand, he tried- wanted so badly for Ryan to feel that he was there. Ryan tried again, this time squeezing his hand first. “Come on Horatio.. please.” He waited, seven minutes later- Horatio had squeezed, and Ryan had almost jumped out of his skin. “Oh my God. Horatio!” he hollered almost at the top of his boyish lungs. It was a start he knew. For all of them.

Oh yeah, so glad Horatio is coming around. Eric you are an idiot. I hope Calleigh doesn't totally side with Eric, I know she looks up to Horatio. Poor Ryan caught right in the middle of it all. So the Dr. has some knowledge of the reasoning behind Ryan being next of kin? Great chapter.

Here it is GUYS! Chapter Five!
This is the most heart-breaking chapter yet- YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
-------------------------------------------
Chapter Five: Awakening
Ryan wondered when this guy would strike again, the man they where after, the man who’d tried to kill Horatio. And it irked him to no end that they didn’t even know who he was. All they had was a “Law Enforcement- Look about him” to go with, and it was annoying him. He sat alone shifting back and forth in the lab chair, in the layout room of the Crime Lab. He’d taken a break from being at Horatio’s side. They had the security cameras as well, but they didn’t shed any light, he’d made sure that his face never was seen. Walking backward through the hallway, and making sure he made Missy turn to face him, so his back was to the camera instead of himself facing the camera. He was smart. Ryan thought, but, He was smarter. Eric and Calliegh weren’t offering much help either- Calliegh had taken Eric’s side just as he had dreaded, and now he was fighting this alone. Ryan didn’t understand why they didn’t want to help the one who’d given them jobs fought for them when he could have just let them fall on the double edged knife that was their lives. He sighed, and stood up pacing around the layout room table, trying to look at the pictures to see anything that seemed off, or not there to him. There wasn’t much to go on, he thought again.
Calliegh was walking into work – and decided that she’d check up on Ryan. She wanted to help as much as the next person, you couldn’t get her wrong but she wanted to see if Ryan could do this on his own, and she was upset with Horatio for making Ryan his Medical Prox. But there was nothing she could do about it now, and realized that Ryan needed all the help he could get. She slowly walked into the layout room, and took notice that Ryan was pacing, and had yet to see her. “Hey” she murmured lightly looking at all of the pictures he’d collected and security tapes that where lined up for watching. Ryan stopped dead in his tracks and turned slightly on one leg. He crossed his arms at his chest, and just stood staring at her. “Thought you said you didn’t want anything to do with me.” He said his eyes narrowing. Calleigh looked at him and sighed, lifting and then dropping her shoulders. “I realized that Eric lost sight of what’s important right now. Horatio.” She said and stepped forward. Ryan offered a little bit of a smile. “I wondered when you’d come around. He needs us.” Ryan said lightly and moved his gaze at the security pictures. Calliegh’s voice got low and she had a worried look on her face. “This guy is good.. too good..” she said and her eyes turned grim. Ryan smiled wider. “What does Horatio say? Oh that’s right- and I quote- ‘We have to be better’ I think…” he said and looked up like he was pondering something. He looked back down for a short moment at the pictures they’d accumulated and the tapes that someone was going to have to watch for the man they where after. Calliegh laughed a little. “Something like that.” She said and moved to Ryan’s side. Ryan looked at her and started running through the evidence like they always did. “What do we know?” he lifted up Missy’s eye witness account, and read it lightly. “He looked like a feeb or a cop – meaning he knew how to carry himself convincing, I wonder if he had a weapon on him as well. That’s usually the first thing people look for..uhm she also says—“ Calliegh cut him off “She also says he had a deep voice, brown hair and – brown eyes.” She shook her head, and started to pace herself. Ryan looked at her. “Wow, that narrows it down to, about – Ninety percent of Miami and he could be in the wind for all we know. But why would you steal something like that.. he had to have known Horatio was sick, and – Wait a minute!” Calleigh’s ears perked and she twisted her head a little to look at him. “Ah the light bulb came on young one.” Ryan just smiled. “He’s probably the one, or one of the people who poisoned H.” Calliegh gave him a little clap, and smiled, even though she’d already thought that. Already had figured that was the case. “Mm, So now – we take another sample of Horatio’s blood, and test it. Once we have the answers, we will know what kind of people we are looking for. I’ll get Natalia on that right away.” Ryan looked at her, and then shook his head. “No, Calleigh, let me do it. It’ll look suspicious with anyone else in his room. We don’t want them to think we are allowing the bad guys this close.” He said and his reasoning fit, he hoped. Calliegh only nodded – he was right.
-- It didn’t matter, it never would, He had what he’d come for, and his plan had been executed perfectly, he blended in, and still they where wondering, he knew. He read over the blood report of Horatio Caine, and smiled as he sat in the parking lot of the very hospital he’d just stolen from. He knew he was smarter than all of them. He was the master of the game, and that was how it would always be – he was smarter than Horatio Caine. He’d watched Horatio Caine’s work since he’d started in Miami, and, Horatio Caine was good at what he did, but he was better. Casanova he called himself. Because he wore so many masks and could invert himself into anyone. He read over the report – Cyanide was in the Lieutenant’s blood stream. And it had worked faster than he could ever imagine – -- Doctor Heming raced to Horatio Caine’s room – alarms where going off, and when she walked in she saw him retching against the tubes in his throat, and tears streaming down his face. “Horatio, Hey, Horatio take it easy, deep breaths, we’ll get those out of there for you, just take deep breaths..” She grabbed his hand and tried to calm him down, but the worry she saw in his face was something she’d rarely see – again in her profession. Horatio was shuddering he was choking and most of all he was afraid.. he couldn’t speak, yet, and his body shivered with memories of his past, of what was about to happen to him, and he didn’t know – He finally was able to pull himself together long enough for the tubes to be slowly and painfully pulled – emergency style from his throat. And it threw him into a coughing fit. Doctor Heming looked at him – “Horatio, deep breaths, deep breaths..” she kept telling him, it helped the pain disappear. Horatio complied. He didn’t know how he’d gotten there or who she was, but he was worried, - but some part of him was telling him to listen. After about ten minutes of trying to calm himself down he lay motionless and fear reigned in his visage. “Wh…who are you..?” he asked finally out of nowhere, his voice husky. Doctor Heming had not left his side - “Doctor Heming, you brought yourself in after being poisoned.” She explained. Horatio looked at her and quirked his head to the side. “Poisoned? – I brought myself in?” he asked and that fear overtook his features as well. Doctor Heming moved to the side of the bed and looked deep into his gaze. “Horatio, do you know where you are? Or who you are for that matter?” she asked curious. Horatio looked at her like he’d never met her in his life. “Ho..Horatio Caine.. Where’s my wife..?” he asked, and tears of saline ran down his features. Doctor Heming looked at him.. she wondered how much of his memory was missing. ---- Ryan had gotten the call out that Horatio had woken up and without saying a word he ran to his hummer and didn’t even wait for Calleigh to jump in, his body was in that much of a rush. He sped to the hospital almost killing three people with the massive monster of a vehicle he was driving. Made it to the hospital without hurting anyone, and ran inside, adrenaline was pumping and his brain was hammering so hard that he knocked a little child over in his wake and kept going. He skidded to a stop in front of Horatio’s room – almost fell over.
Doctor Heming had heard him skid – and waited for him to come inside. Ryan walked inside, slowly and saw that Horatio was indeed awake, and as he approached the aura he felt was an interesting one. “Hey H. Whats up? How you feeling..?” Horatio turned his head to the side, “Wh… who are you?” he asked and looked at Ryan quizzically. Ryan felt shock overwhelm him. “H… I’m Ryan, your trace analyst – ya know Miami Dade Crime Lab?” he asked. Horatio looked at him and then at Doctor Heming. “Where is my wife.” He asked again.. Ryan looked at her, and whispered under his breath. “He remembers Marisol.. but not me.. what the hell was he poisoned with?” Doctor Heming looked at Horatio and then back at Ryan. “We don’t know, and whatever it is, its destroying his brain.” She said, not wanting him to hear. Ryan was afraid now more than ever, and as Calleigh walked through the door, he moved to grab her and drag her back outside. Calleigh looked at him. “Ryan! I wanna see Horatio!” she stepped forward. Ryan looked at her and stood in her way. “No, Calleigh you don’t, he doesn’t remember anything, not us, not the Lab, but he does remember Marisol, and I think its when she was alive.” Worry laced with guilt laced with pain was in his voice. Calleigh looked through the window. She had no words to speak, she indeed was speechless. Ryan kept himself between the door and Calleigh for a long moment. “Just.. Go back to the lab, lets figure out what is doing this to him, and why. And who.” Calliegh complied. She could do nothing more she knew, hanging around would only make everything worse. Ryan walked back into the room with Horatio and Doctor Heming. “Doctor – how long is this going to..” he stopped himself. “Can I talk to you outside?” Doctor Heming merely nodded. “What is it?” she said when they where standing outside. Ryan looked at her. “Marisol is dead. His wife was gunned down. And he was there when she died.” Doctor Heming, for the first time in her career allowed shock to show in her own features. “Oh no..” she said and her hand moved to her mouth… “Oh no.” Ryan only nodded. “So please, do not tell him that she is dead. It would destroy anything we have left of him.” Ryan looked down and saw Calleigh was calling, he answered. “Calleigh please, tell me you have good news.” Calleigh replied, hoping that Ryan was far away from any people. “Cyanide.” Was all she said and she knew the pain Ryan would be feeling. Ryan was speechless, dumbfounded and pain hitched his breath and panged his heart. Cyanide was killing Horatio Caine

The insanity continues! -
Chapter Six: Reality Hits Home
He sat alone in his room. Wondering when Marisol would come be at his side, wondering why no one had answered when he’d asked where she was. He was alone – police protection outside. He didn’t know why. He was afraid something had happened to him while he was unconscious, Poisoned he didn’t know who would do it – from what he remembered he lived a simple life. But, those people who’d come and visited him – They said they knew him.. Miami Dade Crime Lab – flashed in his mind- Was he a cop? Doctor Heming was observing Horatio from a distance, waiting for the test results to come back saying that it was indeed Cyanide. She was worried that it was eating away at his brain. Afraid that he’d lose everything he’d learned, and would be someone that no one knew. She knew about him, and had met him – but she didn’t know him personally. And she was afraid the ones who loved him – in his mind, wouldn’t either.
Ryan was alone in the lab – pacing back and forth. Cyanide was killing the man he looked up to. What- and how where they going to track this man down. He shifted lightly as he stopped and stared into nothing..
Horatio was alone in his room, and felt, by his standards that it was the best time to make an escape. He hated hospitals and he’d be d**ned to stay there any longer. Slowly he pulled himself upright from his laying position. No one was watching him, he noted. He wondered if he’d actually be able to get out of the hospital. He allowed a sly smile to cross his features, maybe it was the Cyanide creating this insanity in him. He didn’t know but he liked the feel of it. Horatio sighed and swung his legs off the edge of the bed, and noticed as his body ached from his toes to his head. He was almost afraid to stand, afraid he’d fall, he slowly pulled himself upright, his legs shook.. nerves where fading as well, as the Cyanide took its toll on his body.
Horatio pulled the IV and all the other monitors out of his body, off of his body. Limped forward a little bit, and decided that the best way to get out was to say that he was going to the bathroom. But, he realized, that there wasn’t a patrol guard outside his room either. He noticed the hospital was completely deserted. He walked out the door, and begun to feel very dizzy. The world was spinning on its axis in his head, and he lost his footing and ended up slamming into the floor..
----Shot awake where he lay, still in the hospital bed, dreaming, again. They’d been haunting him for a while now. He still didn’t understand what was going on, that was the cyanide. It was indeed eating away at his brain.
Ryan was back at the hospital this time – to talk to Horatio about what he knew, and what he didn’t know. He stood outside of the room, looking in at Horatio who seemed to have just had a nightmare. He slowly opened the sliding door and walked inside. Delicate measures needed to be taken.
“Horatio – Its Ryan.” He said as he appeared – “I’m here to help you.” Ryan had never felt this much like an adult in his life. Horatio looked at him, and shook his head lightly. “I just, want to know where my wife is.” He said, his eyes closing.
Ryan shrugged his shoulders. “Marisol.. is.” He stopped and stepped forward. “She’s dead.” He had to tell him he knew, had to break the news.
Horatio allowed saline tears down his face, that where uncontrollable and a sight that no one had seen – in this side of him. “D…dead..” he said and shook his head.. “Th..thats impossible.. we.. we just got married..”
Ryan was shocked. “Horatio, that was four years ago.” He almost whimpered the words, now afraid for Horatio. “You’re the Lieutenant of the Miami Dade Crime Lab.” He explained. “You’re a cop.”
Horatio whimpered almost, the pitch of his voice was higher than usual. Choking back sobs. “I.. I am..” he said and suddenly memories started to slowly return but they weren’t the ones he needed. “Lieutenant…” he whimpered. He couldn’t even imagine himself right now as a cop.
Ryan looked at him and grabbed his hand. “Horatio. You knew who I was when you where unconscious, you squeezed my hand, told me you where still there..” he whimpered and – his eyes where wet with tears. Ryan shook his head. “Please.. Horatio try to remember… I don’t want to lose you… you’re the closest thing I have to a father..” he said, wondering if it would hit home.
Horatio shook his head and turned away, shifting onto his side facing away from Ryan. “I’m no father.. no husband.” He whimpered. “I let my wife die.” He said, and he didn’t turn back –
Ryan looked at him and rested his hand on Horatio’s shoulder. “Horatio, no, don’t say that, your one of the best men I know.. someone I look up to, Calleigh and Eric look up to.. Hell Rick Stetler is jealous as hell of you. Come on Horatio, please.. just… please tell me you remember me.” He whimpered and one tear fell down his face. And landed on Horatio’s shoulder wetting his clothes.
Horatio didn’t move. “I don’t.” he said, and then closed his eyes. Took a deep breath, and didn’t say anything else.
Ryan snorted, and clutched his fists. “Then I will make you remember!” he said, and pain, unlike the pain he’d felt when he’d been shot with the nail gun registered in his heart, his soul.
Horatio just laughed. “There is nothing to remember.” He said. “I am nothing.”
Ryan looked at him. “No.. don’t talk like that Horatio! Please…” Ryan had to stop himself, mentally put the brakes on his mouth, because he was going to spew more. He stepped back, “Fine- think that way, but when you remember, you will be hit, with everything that you’ve done, all the peoples lives you’ve saved! And I’m going to make sure, you stay alive!” he said, and walked to the door. “For your sake, and mine.. H…” He said and walked out the door.

Oh my what an excellent chapter. SO full of pain and sorrow. Horatio will recover, I have faith in you. But it is going to be a long and bumpy road if he continues to sulk at everyone including himself. I know Ryan will help him in his recovery. Horatio is going to need his team more than anything right now.

Very well done, Cassity. Can't wait to see where you take it next. Poor Horatio, can't remember anything, and the cyanide doing it's thing. Not good. Poor Ryan, he so badly wants to tell H what he thinks about the man, and what he feels for him, but can't because he's worried that too much information will cause more harm than good.
Which way to go?
That's the question.
Can't wait to see which way you go.
