Here it is. Enjoy the read.
Chapter SEVENTEEN
Calleigh could hear Horatio’s voice on the radio asking for an update but she was afraid to answer as she watched the flames move along the roof from both directions. She turned to look at Eric with tears in her eyes. “What are we going to do?” Eric was almost in tears himself as he watched in disbelief. His brother-in-law had been through so much. He could not fathom this tragedy for him.
Frank had somehow kept his head when he saw the first flames and called for the fire trucks. He was the first to act when he realized that all the shooting had stopped. “Hey, everybody let’s get moving there is a little girl in there with the bad guys.” The entire group of law enforcement began to move towards the building.
Ryan reached the window as Justine opened it. He stepped around it and holding his hands up showing that he did not have his gun drawn he shouted. “The window is too small for you but I can take Josephine out of harms way.”
Justine pulled the bedding off his daughter and giving her a quick kiss he handed her out the window to Ryan. “Take her to her mother. Tell Ellen that I did love her once. I know that she will see our daughter is taken care of.” He then closed the window and walked back into the other room.
As Ryan, Rick and Josephine moved quickly away from the burning building they heard a single shot report of a pistol. They two men looked at each other and both agreed that a bullet was better than burning alive. They made their way around the building almost running head long into Calleigh.
Ryan took a look at her face and was shocked to see that she had been crying. “What, you think I would let the boss go through that kind of loss again?”
It was at this time that the radio quacked with H’s voice. “Calleigh, what is going on?”
Rick looked at Calleigh and smiled took the radio from her; mouthing the words ‘you owe me.’ “Horatio there have been complications. We are all here and that includes one very freighted little girl.”
The relief flooded through both Horatio and Ellen, it was as if a huge weight was lifted from their shoulders. Horatio found his voice first and spoke into the radio. “How quickly can you bring her to her mother?”
Calleigh reached over and took the radio from Rick. “We have an Army chopper waiting to bring her to you. She will be there within the hour.”
The entire company was in a happy mood due to the secured safety of the child. As Calleigh turned and looked around she could see everyone’s face was shoot covered but none of their group had come to harm. Eric was standing a little behind her and his smile looked even more radiant with his soot covered face. He stretched out his arms to Josey and was rewarded with the delighted squeal of a happy child. It was decided that he would ride along with her in the chopper.
A light rain had begun to fall and the whaling of the fire engines could be heard in the distance as he walked to the chopper with her held firmly in his arms. He continued to talk to her and tell her that they were going to her Mommy and Horatio. The ride was a bit freighting to the small child. But Eric’s continued words helped her copy with the sights and sounds of the ride. As they neared the hospital both seemed to know who was waiting for them there. As the chopper touched the heliport Eric was the first to unbuckle the safety belts and jump off.
Bending low due to the rotors still turning he did a crouching run to the open door that awaited him. As he got into the building he stood tall and held Josey tightly to him. All the hospital staff that he encountered smiled back at the two of them. The story of Josey’s rescue had spread through the hospital like the raging fire at the motel.
When Eric stepped into the room where Horatio and Ellen were the squeal of delight from both child and mother was not lost on the ears of those there. Josephine could not get to her mother fast enough nor her mother to her. As the two embraced there were tears of joy from the mother and from the nurse that was in the room to remove Horatio’s traction lines.
The nurse leaned over to Horatio and told him he still was confined to the bed until the doctor looked at him. As she left the room she tugged at Eric’s sleeve and he turned and left with her, closing the door behind them. Leaving those in the room to copy with what had happened in the last 24 hours.
EPILOGUE
A few days after this Horatio was allowed to leave the hospital. The traction had done the job and surgery was no longer needed.
Remember the owner of the dinner? Well, it would seem that he had no family and had left everything he had to Ellen. In his will he stated that he had always cared for Ellen and wished that he had met her before Justin. He wanted to be sure that she was taken care of if anything every happened to him.
The Army smoothed out the red tape on Justin’s death. But due to his action there were no benefits.
Mike and Jack had surrendered to the authorities and were in jail. They were awaiting the Army to take them for their deeds done there and then they would come back to Miami to pay for the criminal deeds done there.
Ryan was back in his little room going over his former cases. Stetler was there pounding away to find a wrong that wasn’t there.
Calleigh was put in charge of the team while Horatio was out on medical leave.
A few days after his release from the hospital Horatio was at the dinner with Ellen and Josephine to reopen it’s doors. The entire team was there. Along with the firemen that had come to her rescue a few weeks before. It was a great celebration for all and after the ribbon was cut and everyone went inside Horatio looked over the entire group and once again thought of his team as his family. He then looked at Ellen and Josey and realized that his family had just grown by two.
THE END
*******
I hope that you have all enjoyed the story. I will start thinking of another one. It may take a little while. It will not be a sequell to this one.
