I wrote this as an answer to a challenge on another site. The challenge was doing anything for a picture, making a wp, a banner or any artwork or writing. Meanwhile, I'd been handed an idea from our own dear Kiveli. At the same time Manon had requested to become part of the Harem. The planets aligned, the moon was blue...
Now, just for fun, and in the tradition of those around me, I'm putting this into installments and unless I get loads of comments, no one will know how Manon fits into this.
Part one
Usually, all one had to do to spread the news in the lab was whisper to someone and by the next day, the news would be on everyone's lips, even the janitor. Today, however, Eric Delko needed to get the message out even faster than that; this was a red alert and the more people that knew about it soon, the less carnage there would be.
Ducking his head through the door of the lunchroom, Eric was relieved to find Wolfe at the coffeepot, drumming his fingers while the black liquid poured into the pot.
“Hey, got a heads up for you.”
“Has Valera finished that DNA sequence?”
Sometimes Wolfe could be so single minded! “No! Uh, I don’t know. That’s not what I’m talking about. More important than evidence, man!”
Ryan Wolfe’s brows juxtaposed each other over his brown eyes.
Eric felt a wash of irritation at having to dig Wolfe out of his ‘work’ track. “Look, in a way, this is about work, just not about whatever you’re working on. You need to know, H isn’t going to be in a very good mood for a while.”
“Oh? Why? They cut the budget again? We going to get to baby-sit some celebrity doing janitorial community service?”
“If only! No, worse. You know how the Miami-Dade PD Auxiliary does that Buy-A-Man Auction benefit every year?”
Wolfe nodded over his coffee cup, and suspiciously smelled the brew before slurping the tiniest sip. “Yeah, they’ve done a different theme every year. Last year they had paramedics and the year before that they got the firefighters, right? So?”
“I don’t know what the theme is this year but I do know the brass told H he’s going to be one of the ones to be auctioned.”
“You’re kidding, right? Horatio? Parading down a runway trying to get rich women to bid on him?” The coffee forgotten, Ryan’s eyes roamed the room as if trying to picture the event. He shook his head. “I can’t feature him doing that. Didn’t he say no?”
His head swinging back and forth on his bull neck, Eric’s dark eyes seemed to deepen. “I don’t know how it went down. It was Kathy, the chief’s assistant who told me about Horatio being given the news.”
“Kathy! How do you rate?”
Delko smiled playfully. “I rate! Don’t worry about how. She called to warn me about why Horatio might be, shall we say, difficult, this afternoon.”
Ryan thoughtfully brought the coffee up to his lips again but didn’t drink. “This afternoon! Jeez! I wish I’d applied for vacation, now.” He drained the cup and went to the sink. Running the water until it reached the appropriate temperature, he squeezed a miniscule amount of dish detergent into the mug, grabbed a paper towel, and proceeded to wash.
Right behind Wolfe, Delko went on, “I’ve already told Cooper, and the new guy, Donwell, and Valera and Natalia, and I text messaged Calleigh. I still have to find the rest.”
“Why not text message everyone? Then you can fill in the details to anyone you can find to talk to, but at least the warning will be out.” Ryan dried the cup and carefully placed it in the cupboard.
Delko went over and slapped a large hand on the brown suit coat his friend wore, his lips spread in a wide grin. “Man, I knew we kept you around for some reason.”
