Face off! Part 5 Perfect! She was in a remote corner of the lab and alone. She also had the fume-exhaust fans running, so even casual by passers wouldn’t be able to overhear any conversation. Unseen, he eyed her through the glass. Well, to say the least, she certainly looked different from last night. Her short blond hair was pulled back with a plain headband and the lab coat hid any hint of the curves she’d displayed in a formfitting outfit the night before. When Manon looked startled, as she glanced up to see her boss observing, he went to the door to reassure her. He remembered too well how observation used to rattle him as a rookie cop. Once there, however, he wasn’t sure what to say. After all, how to start a conversation with an employee who’d just bought you? Both of them spoke at the same time, “About last night—” Both paused. Manon nervously picked up a vial of liquid and pretended to examine it, while Horatio found the cuticle on the forefinger of his left hand very interesting. Horatio spoke barely loud enough to be heard over the fan rumble. “I honestly hadn’t realized, last night, who you were. I guess I didn’t recognize you. I hope I didn’t seem rude.” ‘A hell of way to talk to an employee. It sounds like you’re flirting!’ Manon smiled at the silky, purring explanation. “I thought that was the case. I’ve been told my ‘glad-rags’ look is ‘way different from my work persona. I haven’t been working here all that long, anyway, so there’s no reason you should have made the connection.” Both smiled nervously again. “I got the word we weren’t supposed to even know about it. Ordinarily, I wouldn’t even have gone, even though I’m a member of the board, along with my father. It’s just that I heard the girls talking at one of the Planning Committee meetings and, well, I wasn’t going to let that happen.” So, this young lady was from a family wealthy enough to hold places on charity boards? Interesting. “You weren’t going to let what happen?” “I hate to admit it but I run with a crowd that thinks their money can buy them anything. I won’t even tell you what they said when someone suggested your name as one to be put on the block for this year.” “Oh?” He felt frozen against the doorjamb. Manon blushed violently. “You know how kids out on the streets talk? Well, believe me, educated money can talk far filthier with far more detail.” “About me?” She walked over to him and assumed his leaning pose against the glass wall, forming a ninety-degree angle to him. “Yes, sir, about you.” She could feel his blue eyes concentrate their powers on her slender form and didn’t squirm. “I’ve learned a tremendous amount of respect for you, sir; you’re not just a fine criminalist, a good police officer, but you’re a wonderful human being.” She resisted the urge to add, ‘and the most handsome man in the world’. Horatio’s eyes flickered briefly before returning to their observation. “If any one of those women last night had succeeded in winning you, you’d be a long time in regaining even a shred of your dignity. You’d have been paraded out like Astor’s pet pony, times a million. Worse, she'd have all of her girlfriends come along, too. One at a time, they’re bad, but in packs, they can be just plain ugly! Then, even though you didn’t put out, someone would have told everyone that you had, and worse, at least one would either accuse you of giving her an STD or getting her pregnant.” In answer to the wondering look on his face, she continued, “Oh! All in good fun, of course!” She shook her head and looked down at her scuffed sneakers. “Like I said, I’m not proud of who I sometimes have to associate with. This time though,” she raised her head, “if I hadn’t been in on the gossip, I wouldn’t have known to attend. I was just surprised at their tenacity! I mean, when Morgana’s bid topped the highest for the evening for starters, I wasn’t surprised, but then when Julie went even higher before I could get a word out, I was floored! I never saw so many women so anxious to get their claws on one man before!” TBC

And now ~~~TA-DA! La chapter finale! With the pic that inspired the whole thing at the end! Horatio felt like he was listening to an explanation of the unifying theory of the universe; nothing she said made sense to him. “But, you won, correct?” Manon blushed again. “Only because my family has more money than their families. If they thought they could have put it on credit, the bidding would still be going on!” “And they wanted to get the highest bid, because…” A light dawned in her blue eyes. A slack look crossed her oval face before being chased off by pure amazement. “Because being with you would raise their social credits to diamond encrusted platinum level! Because you’re a hot—because you’re so fantastically—because they think you’re probably good in—” He put on his mean cop face. “And you worked so hard to win me because…” She raised herself to her full five and a half foot stature and evenly returned his glare. “Because, I knew I could stop the ridiculousness before it got off the ground. Because, when I joined this team, I joined! I know you and everyone else on the team would go to bat for me, work to save me from any threat you possibly could. I know the same is expected from me. Yeah, I'm the new kid here, but I figure that who goes to the support post first doesn’t matter! You’re all not only the best, but each one is worthy of absolute care and trust. You lead, of course, in all ways. You don’t think I didn’t do my homework before I applied for the job? I had my family’s people perform a thorough background check on everyone in the entire department. Your history is rather interesting.” Horatio’s eyebrows bobbed at this as the curve of his lips spread behind his cheeks. “Your people, eh?” “Amazing what money can buy.” She shrugged. Horatio had no doubt that everything she'd learned about him or anyone else would be kept absolutely confidential. “And what are your plans for me, may I ask? When do I make good on your well spent money?” This time it was Manon’s turn to put a wondering gaze onto Horatio only it was shorter lived than his. “Oh! Gosh! Yeah, that’s what I wanted to say when you first came in. To tell you not to worry about it, no date. I won’t call you, ever, well, except on work related issues, of course. You're clear. Just forget last night ever happened.” She fluttered her hand as if waving off a fly. She couldn’t know that the significance of her words washed over Horatio like a refreshing shower of crystal clear water on the hottest day in history. He knew she meant every word she’d said and that they were spoken from the heart. Rarely did he encounter people so completely willing to go to bat for him. “Thank you.” The simple words rumbled from the deepest part of his being. It was hard to determine which of the two were the more relieved; Horatio at being released from a duty he wasn’t sure he could tolerate or Manon at not having overstepped the bounds of propriety with her new boss. Before they had to figure out what to say next or how to extricate themselves politely from the situation, Horatio’s pocket twittered. Ten minutes later, shades in place, Horatio was striding down the sunlit ramp in front of the Miami-Dade Police Department and Laboratory building, headed out for a new crime scene. As usual, his mind began organizing the events of the day so far. Calleigh was not only on top of the mini-mart robbery, but was about to nail the suspects on two other crimes as well. He knew Delko, Wolfe and Boa Vista were probably already at this new scene and would be ready to hand him cogent information as soon as he arrived. He had just found out that the newest member of the team (Donwell was a transfer so not, officially, new) was not only good at her job, but a terrific addition as a team player. Oh, and yeah, he, all fifty-one years of him, was considered to be a good looking hotty and suspected of being good in bed. The End
