I know that you guys have been frothing at bit for the next chapter. JAG was one of my favorite shows the whole time it was on. As always enjoy.
Year 4 Month 5
It didn’t take long for the big CH-46 Sea Knight to come thump, thump, thumping over the mountain. When it landed in the town square the back end lowered and out marched a platoon of US Marines. Before they could line up in formation a crowd had gathered. Brain James, Col. Degustie and Horatio were out front of the people. The mayor spoke first. “What can we do for you gentlemen?”
The platoon leader was Lt. J. J. Wells; he stepped out from the men and walking forward gave Brain a crisp salute. “Sir, we are officially here to request if there is anything the US Navy ship Enterprise can do for you.” Brain returned the salute and smile. “Well now we probably can do some negotiation and trading with the USS Enterprise. Also we can offer a place for your men and women on board to come ashore and at least have some grass beneath you for a spell. Also we do have some supply of food stock that we can share with the ship.” LT. Wells looked at Brain for a brief moment he had to swallow several times before he could reply to Mr. James. “Parade rest.” He yelled over his shoulder. “Sir, we have been up and down both coasts of what once was our great country. We have found many small pocket communities like this one. You are the first to offer soccer to us in four years. Excuse me sir.” It was then that a tear trickled down his cheek. He removed his helmet and turned to his men. “Men. We have just been offered our first shore leave in 4 years.” The platoon looked from one to another. “Attention! Fall-out!” The platoon broke formation and began to mingle with those that had gathered. He turned back to Mr. James and extended his hand. Brain took the hand and shook it. Then he introduced Col. Degustie and Horatio, all four men walked into the town meeting building that held the mayors office.
Over the course of the next few weeks we put the dorms to good use. Many of the personal off the Enterprise took shore leave. In return Capt. Harmon Rabb of the US Enterprise gave information about the land around about our little valley. There was many a meeting that lasted late into the night between the Capt, Brain, Rick and Horatio. Information about the state of the once great nation of the United States was hard to take. Of the major ports none had survived the flooding. Among the major cities that were not habitable were Washington D.C, New York City, Chicago, Denver, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston and Portland. They had come across a number of communities but none had been able to set up any type of government.
Capt. Rabb said that there was a large valley just to the east that would house the wild zoo animals it was walled in on three sides. It was about 1000 acres of grass land. A fence could be rigged up at the south end where it opened out into a river delta. This would give the northern area of the valley back to the community for farming use. So it was decided that when the snow was melted we would have a heard drive.
To the west of our valley were several small valleys that could be used for over flow as the community started to grow. Communication was a problem. But the Capt. informed us that he had radio equipment that could be set up in the other valleys. And set up a relay tower on the top of the mountains in between.
Harm leaned back in his chair and took a puff on his cigar. “We’ve come across a lot of pockets of people over the course of the last four years. But, yours is the first that has been able to set up any form of government.” Both Brain and Rick had accepted a cigar from Harm and were enjoying the good smoke. Horatio said that he was going to hear enough just for being in the same room with all the smoke. With the new baby his wife would have his hide. “More likely she will make me strip outside and take a bath before she and Lin Woo will let me in the house.” To this the other men laughed.
“Capt. Rabb my wife and Lin Woo have asked me to extend you an invitation to lunch. Lin Woo is a superb cook. My wife isn’t half bad, but even she says that she can’t hold a candle to Lin’s meals.” Capt Rabb looked over at Horatio a moment and replied. “Will she make me strip and take a bath before I get to come in the house?” Again all four men laughed. Brain piped up at that moment. “Lin Woo’s cooking has become legend in the valley. If you did have to strip and take a bath it would be worth it.” Harm looked at the ceiling then back to Horatio. “Would tomorrow be OK? Also can I bring my family?” Horatio said yes in answer to both questions but how big was his family? “Wife, her names is Mac; and a set of twins age 3, their names are Mason & Marie.” Horatio smiled and said. “Twins. Well, that must have made for tight quarters aboard ship.”
Capt. Rabb sat up straight and looked at the other three men. “I have a problem. I need a place to put the families that I have on board the ship. Also we have knowledge of several other vessels that are in the same need. The road from the ocean to hear is about 200 miles and recon showed that there was a rail line that is just on the other side of the mountain that goes from the cost to there. We could construct a rail line through the pass into this valley; this would give us a direct link to you from the sea. This would enable us to send our families to safety as we continue to patrol the shore. We could expand your community to the next few valleys and connect all of them by rail.” The talk continued for a little while longer. It ended when Lightning jumped up in the middle of the table and looked at Horatio emitted a chip and a low growl. Capt. Rabb looked at the big cat and then at Horatio. “Yours I presume.” Horatio nodded. “He was sent to tell me it is time for me to come home.”
All four men stood and shook hands. Capt. Rabb stretched and then turning around he asked. “Which way to the billet you have for me?” The mayor told the Captain that his sleeping quarters were at the James house that night. As the walked out Lightning sneezed and then looked at the men and chirped as if to ask ‘what is that smell?’ Horatio patted the big cats head and told him. “Come on boy let’s get home before my wife saddles up Dragon and comes to get me. Now, that would not be the best thing.” As if in answer to this Lightning omitted another chirp. As Horatio swung up on Jako he began to laugh and he crossed his hands on the saddle horn and leaned on them. “At least the horse has auto pilot. But, I still would rather have my hummer.” He then turned the horse in the direction of home and left. Lightning keeping stride right beside him.
When Horatio got home he put Jako up and as he got to the back door he saw me on the other side of the screen holding it shut. Horatio held up his hands in surrender and began to shed his clothes. “It was a long meeting dearheart.” Lightning sniffed the pile of discarded clothing and sneezed. “At least he knows that smell is better left outside. Get on in here I have the bath ready for you.” Horatio’s eyebrows went up and he smiled. “Are you going to help?” I smiled at him and tilted my head. “If you are a good boy I will wash your hair.” Horatio hurried into the bathroom where he could get out of the cold and into my adminstration of love and affection.

There is a lot that happens in this chapter. But I want to start getting back to writing about H and Kate. As always enjoy.
Year 4 Months 6, 7 & 8
As the days lengthened and got warmer we began to put into action many of the plans that the community had voted on. The first was to make the railroad tracks usable. The second was to extend the tracks into the valley. Third was moving the zoo animals to the other valley. We had to build a docking area for the Enterprise and any other ship that had the same desires as the crew of the Enterprise. During this time many of the Enterprise personal had taken shore leave. We also did some forays to the north, south and west to where we could expand our community to.
One of the first forays was to the oil refinery that we had found the previous year. With the help of the Enterprise crew we began to build a pipe line. We also found a small air stripe that was close enough to the valley that we could build a sub-community around it so that we could extend our forays even further inland.
We got to know many of the families that were aboard her and we began to make cottages for them. There were several others ships that showed up during these months and they too had family personal they wanted to have on land base. Soon there was a port city where the ships could dock and off load and the railroad started to take the people inland.
It seemed that the word of our community began to spread inland as well. They were small groups of people that came to us that wanted to build near us and be apart of our community. Many of these people were sent to build up the sub-communities. We still needed to farm the land for food so we extended even further inland to find land that could be used. With communications restored to some extent we were able to extend ourselves and stretch out across the land again.
Though Washington D.C. was not inhabitable many of the buildings were still intact. So a team was selected to go in with radiation suits to see if they could retrieve two documents, the Bill of Rights and the Constitution of the United States. Horatio went with the team and left both myself and Lightning behind.
When he returned he told us of all that he had seen and what had happened. They had five hours to find the two documents. This was all the time the suits would allow them to stay in the hot zone, besides the suits were hot and sticky to be in for any longer than that. They arrived by air at Andrews Air Force Base and located several trucks that had gasoline in them which could be used to get into the city.
Driving through the deserted streets of the once great city was strange and made one feel uneasy. They could see that the city itself had not been damaged. The radiation level varied from spot to spot. There were buildings that had been destroyed the White House, the Capitol building and much of the Pentagon. The Pentagon was so hot that it was decided that they would not go near it.
The team went to the Smithsonian building that housed the two documents and found that the radiation level was one of the lowest. When they got inside the level even went down more. It was so low that they were able to remove their suits for the time that they were in there. Because of the security that was in place to protect these two documents it took the team awhile to get into the vault. Because Horatio background on the bomb squad he had been selected to go with the team. He helped in placing some of the charges that were used to get into the vault.
Finally the vault was breached and the two documents were found and retrieved. Horatio said that as he and Capt Rabb stood there holding the documents and looked at each other each knowing that the other felt a lump in his throat because both of them felt this was a moment that would preserve the nation. Now both documents had viewing cases as well as protective vaults. So the documents were sealed into their viewing cases and the cases were brought back to our community.
When this foray team returned it was decided that we were going to have to elect officials and get names for the community and the port and the sub-communities. There wasn’t a problem with the port city name. It became New Washington and it was decided that this was where the seat of government should be. The James family moved to New Washington because Brian James was elected to be President for the next four years. His vice president was an admiral that had wandered into one of the sub-communities at the beginning of the sixth month. Adm. A J Chegwidden.
This left our town with electing a mayor and a name. The name for the town was Great Hope. The new mayor was Horatio Caine. He had once told me that he hated politics so it was a big surprise when he told me he wanted to run for office.
“Where much is given much must be returned in kind.” He had told me this was the reason that he felt the need to help lead the community. “My past experience and knowledge can be used to make life better for all of us here.” Then he pulled me into his arms and told me he loved me and asked me to grow old with him. I said I would.
The next few years were filled with growth. The communities became towns and cities. The US Constitution was upheld and many new laws were voted on. Communities elected representation to go to New Washington and be a standing congress. We all were surprised and pleased that Calleigh became our senator for the city of Great Hope. “If H can be a mayor I can be a senator. She also told us that she and Ryan were expecting again. To the Alexx told her that she just better plan on being in New Hope for the arrival of their child. “I am not moving for a long time and maybe never again.”
The MIT group decided that the buildings that they should just stay put because there was enough equipment in New Hope for them to work with and there was room to grow with the new city. One of the improvements to the city was an electric rail system. So that the city itself had transportation for its people and it did not have to depend on oil and gas to get around.
Horatio’s second in command became Frank Tripp. He told Horatio that he was so use to watching his back that this seemed the best job for him to do. He added to the comments. “H- -l, we can save on the commute because we live next door.” To this everyone laughed as both he and H rode the new electric rail system. Horatio told the group that he still missed driving his hummer. We had given the two they brought with them to the Navy when it started building the rail system.
Eric and Twomoons said they didn’t want to get into politics no mater what. They both agreed that the Foul Farm was a lot easier to work with than people.
Toby had taken the elephant family to the valley that had become the known as Zoo Valley. No community was allowed to build with in it and the animals were allowed to roam free. Toby and a few others built a small community at the southern entrance so that they could control who went into the valley and keep an eye on the animal population with in it.
