OK I took a page from some one else on this chapter. But I was getting too many characters to keep them streight. But it gave me a chance to show the softer side of Horatio and Frank.
As always enjoy.
Year 4 Month 2
I was entering my last trimester in the pregnancy. I found that Horatio was the most loving of husbands. He did his chores and mine. What he didn’t do Lin Woo did. This left me with quite a bit of free time. I spent a lot of it in the sewing room at the art building. I had to make the all the baby quilts and bedding before he arrived. The ultra sound that Alexx had done on us showed that the baby was a boy. I don’t think H stopped smiling for a week. Of course Lightning was getting bigger and he would sit at me feet when H wasn’t with me. He looked like a statue at times; because he seemed never to move. But he watched everything that came within 20 yards of me.
Horatio and Twomoons took him over the mountains to hunt once a month. For the rest of the time we would put animals in his hunting pen. Except for Christmas breakfast he did not get food from the table. We did not want to make him a house pet. As I watched them go on their last trip I could see Lightning making his leaps through the snow. Being a cat he did not like the snow but he accepted it as part of the world’s natural state. He chirped his displeasure at Horatio as they moved out towards the mountain ridge. When they returned three days later with Lightning’s kill, Twomoons told me that the cat got right down to business and made a fast kill. “He doesn’t like the wet snow and he knew that he had a nice warm dry fire to lie in front of so he was quick to kill.”
I asked Twomoons how the foul farm was coming along and he told me that Ryan, Eric and him had put in some incubators a few weeks before Christmas. The MIT group had strung their place for electricity and they also had light in the evenings and found that everyone loved to read to the babies. The babies in turn seemed to love the attention. He told us that it took all six of them to gather the eggs in the morning. One of the women would be left with the babies while the other five would go out to the foul’s enclosure and hunt the eggs. Now the chickens were no problem they always laid the eggs in the hen house but the others well it was like Easter every morning.
Horatio laughed when he heard this. “I would love to see Eric and Ryan hunting eggs in the morning.” Twomoons looked at H and told him to come over any morning he not only could watch but he could help hunt as well.
Twomoons also told Horatio that they had been given two puppies out of one the Australian Shepherd litters that the James family had. They were both males, one was blue merle and the other was red merle. They were going to use them to help herd the big birds mostly, but they would use them to help with the others as well. Twomoons and his wife were looking at getting a female Shepherd from another litter so that they could breed them. Horatio said that as long as Lightning was with us that he didn’t think we would need a dog. However we did take in some barn cats. Lightning thought they were stunted cheetahs. He didn’t have much to do with them because he didn’t hunt field mice.
We had to add another bedroom for Lin Woo. This made our little cottage a three bedroom with two full baths. We also had an attached washroom which we shared with our next door neighbors the Tripps. Their cabin was about 100 feet to the east of ours and we also shared the barn. This was half way between the two cottages.
Because we were close to the Tripps we were the first to know when Amy went into labor. We got the horses hitched up and got her to the clinic as soon as possible. It was a hard labor for the young girl and when the baby was delivered there were complication and we lost Amy. It was a sad day for all who had come to know her. She had started to smile more the longer she was with the Tripps. Gladys said that she was wonderful at the art of cross-stitching. Amy had made her several pieces.
There wasn’t much in the way of alcoholic beverage but Horatio found some and got Frank quite drunk. Lightning sat with Horatio and Frank chipping at them as they drank. It was the only time I every saw my mate even tipsy was that night when he gave comfort to his good friend. Lin Woo and I sat with Gladys and the baby girl, which they named Charlotte Amy Tripp. We cried and held each other then cried and held the baby. Lin Woo made a large pot of soup and made us all eat. It was hard for us all but we knew that Frank and Gladys would take care of the little girl as if she were their very own.
When we finally got back to our own house and began to get ready for bed I realized how close he was to being drunk. He looked at the bed as he walked into the bedroom and then at his shoes. “I need to take my shoes and clothes off. But I can’t feel the ends of my fingers.” I walked over to him and unbuttoned his shirt. He smiled and stoked my hair. I then had him sit on the edge of the bed and removed his shoes and socks. I then removed his shirt and gently pushed him back on the bed. I then had to undo his belt and unzip his pants. It was at this point that he began to laugh and told me it had been along time since anyone had undressed him and put him to bed. To this I told him not to get use to it and not to make a habit of coming home after a night of drinking. He got under the blankets and watched as I then prepared myself for bed.
I looked over at Lightning to be sure he was in his bed and saw that he was already asleep. I turned out the light and went to the bed where Horatio had pulled back the covers to let me get in beside him. I snuggled down next to him and we lay in each others embrace for a long while. Finely Horatio stoked my hair and kissed the top of my head. “I don’t know what I would do if I lost you like that. Promise me you will stay with me.” I looked up at him and realized he was crying. I then took his face in my hands and kissed him on the lips and promised that I would not leave him that way. We managed to somehow finally get to sleep.
As always enjoy.
