I hope this is what you have been waiting for. If not stay tuned for the next instalement.
Year 3 month 10
The next week we had 3 births that brought much joy to our community. The first was that of the female elephant Ginger. No one even knew that she was going to have an offspring. I think everyone went out to see the small new pachyderm. She was not shy and seemed to love to be touched by everyone. Her mother didn’t mind and she accepted all the morsels that were brought to her by all that came to admire her little (?) baby.
The next two births were so close together that Alexx was jumping from room to room in the clinic. Calleigh and Ryan came in about 8pm when Calleigh’s water broke. Then within about an hour Natalia and Eric came in and she was in heavy labor. Both women called out encouragement to each other. Both Ryan and Eric became completely useless during the time. Alexx finely told them both to go find a pot of water to boil. They told her to get someone else to boil the water they were going to be there for the birth of their child. Horatio and I arrived shortly after Nat and Eric. Though we did not have telephones any longer riders would be sent the length of the valley announcing important matters and these two births had been watched carefully because of the radiation that the mothers had been exposed to early in their pregnancy.
I actually watched H get a few gray hairs that night as Calleigh went through the birth of her daughter. Ryan and Calleigh chose the name Elizabeth Louise Wolfe. When Nat’s baby boy was born within minutes of Lizzy everyone was relieved. Eric and Nat chose the name William Horatio Delko. Both babies were perfect in every way.
Both fathers were so overjoyed with the births you would have thought that they had given birth instead of the women. As soon as H could get into see Calleigh and Natalia he was in the room like a shot. Both sets of parents had already told H and me that we would be surrogate grandparents. We had accepted the title with a glad heart.
After each of the births we heard Lightning outside the clinic give a very loud cat howl. While we were in the room looking at the new arrivals we could hear him outside the window crying to get in. Alexx came in and informed us that her clinic was no place for that d- -m cat. But Lightning listened to no one but Horatio. The window did not have glass in it and we all looked up to see Lightning perched on the window sill. We all swore that he had a big grin on his face. H went over to the window and whispered something to the big cat. The cat took a good look at both the women and the babies, turned to look Horatio and gave him a lick then he jumped down to the ground outside.
We didn’t stay much longer as H and I had class the next day with the children. Horatio watched over me like a mother hen if he thought I was over taxing myself. Of course he or Lightning was always with me. Though Alexx had band Lightning from the clinic she knew the cat had almost human like qualities when it came to loyalty. As we were about to leave Horatio turned to Ryan and asked. “Who is at the armory?” Ryan told H that Corp. Bearcheif and his wife had built their cabin within a stone’s throw of their cabin and were educating themselves on every firearm that was there. They were taking care of the armory until Cal & Ryan returned.
Both women only spent 24 hours at the clinic. When Cal & Ryan got home Lilly Bearcheif told Calleigh that she was going to help with the house work and cooking for the next few weeks. Ryan asked if she could continue helping with the cooking for longer. Cal still had a blind spot when it came to preparing a meal. She knew how to boil water and could make a sandwich and even throw a salad together. But a receipt that required measuring out ingredients usually became a disaster when Calleigh tried her had at it. It was a good thing that Ryan liked eggs. Cal was able to fry them and boil them. But it seemed the only food item that she had been able to master.
Natalia on the other hand was a superb cook. She often had made casseroles and spilt them taking half to Calleigh and telling her that she could return the help in other ways. She would say. “I was born into a big family. Mommy taught me to cook when I was little and I just always loved it. I just never learned to cut the receipt down for two.”
Because Calleigh had a thing for eggs as her main food ingredient Ryan had brought in chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese to keep. “If all I get to eat is eggs at least I can have some variety in them.” He had built pins to keep them in and they seem to have a thriving community of foul. “Never thought I would wind up a chicken farmer.” He told Eric one day. Eric gave him a grin and replied. “Yeah, but you are a d- -m good one. You always feed them at the same time of day.”
Ryan looked at him and to this he said. “Doesn’t everybody?” It never occurred to him that being OCD would help with keeping any type of fowl.
One day after the babies were born the Lakesides paid a visit. They had come in by truck. This was unusual because it took special permission to use the few trucks that we had and the gasoline to power them was not going to be on any of our shopping list forays for a long time to come.
They had rounded up the 2 dozen ostriches that had been up with the other wild animals. “Ryan we want to add a new group of fowl to your little fowl farm.” When Ryan looked at the birds he started to laugh. “Hey Cal I think you may have trouble cooking these eggs.” Calleigh just gave him a look that said ‘yours is coming’. Blake, Eric, Twomoons and Ryan spent the afternoon constructing an enclosure for the large birds.
When the enclosure was finished everyone sat down to lemonade and carrot cake. Calleigh informed her husband that she had made the icing. “Well, it is another receipt that you have been able to perfect at least.” To which she gave him a flat hand splat to the back of his head. “You knew I had limitations when you chose me for your mate.”
Rubbing the back of his head he looked at her and smiled. “It’s only a small one. I overlook it most of the time. Even when I get tired of egg sandwiches I will always be able to eat fried eggs. Or will that be egg?” He was looking out at the large pen. “You know I will have to go the library and do research on these birds. See if they require anything special.”
