And this is the last post for today... I just hopped in at my office and now the next meeting is just only 10 minutes ahead. So a quick update to the next chapter...
The problem, however, is that Horatio urgently needs to go to NY, while this trip isn't that safe due to a fed at his heels. So Calleigh is preparing a special back up...
Chapter 17
Horatio and Eric had left to catch their plane while a couple of miles outside of Miami, on Aton Stud, Erin Shaen was ready to go for the stables of the Arabian mares, because the veterinarian had announced a newborn colt. It was the first foal of the season and Erin was already very excited to hear more about the uncomplicated birth … and of cause how the little colt was doing and looking like. The ringing of the phone pulled her back and with a little sigh she turned around to her desk again and grabbed the receiver.
“Aton Stud, Erin Shaen speaking.”
“This is Calleigh Duquesne of the CSI, Miami Dade Police Department. – Do you remember me?”
Calleigh still was not sure if her decision would be welcomed at the end, but she wanted to make the trip for Horatio as safe as possible.
Erin smiled when she answered: “Of cause I can remember one of the most exciting moments in my whole life! – What can I do for you, Calleigh?”
Calleigh was glad that Erin Shaen did not seem to be upset by her call and so she tried to explain the problem to Erin as short as possible. Finally she asked if a contact to Miko Steel could be helpful to persuade Frank Slater to let Horatio travel to New York for a short time.
“Hmmm, I’m not very good in those juristic questions, but of cause you can contact Miko to give you a hand. – It sounds like your lieutenant has quite a severe problem.” Erin was very sure that Horatio Caine would not be a guy who got involved into such deep trouble willingly. This severe case of self-justice would not match with his character. Certainly Erin was informed about the entire case and had followed the info on the news.
“This help would be very much appreciated, Erin,” Calleigh said euphorically.
“What did the evidence told you so far?” Erin asked.
“That’s the problem,” Calleigh confided. “Until now we’ve got no evidence, neither to blame, nor to help him out…”
“… and this means innocent until the opposite is proven. – Don’t worry, Calleigh. I’ll just give you the cell-phone-number of Miko and the address of his office in New York. At the moment he actually IS in New York. …. – Maybe this information could also become useful for Lt. Caine.”
Today was the first time, Calleigh really liked this woman. During their first contact - when a killer was after the owner of Aton Stud and its CEO, Erin Shaen - she experienced Erin as a tough and sometimes arrogant business-woman. While investigating the case, Calleigh learned to respect the multi-layered character of Erin and had to admit that it was also her, who had finally managed to bring Calleigh and Horatio together.
“I don’t know how to thank you, Erin,” Calleigh mumbled.
Erin grinned from one ear to the other and also in her voice one could feel her smile.
“Well, let’s say this is only a very good occasion to give back some of this wonderful help you’ve done for me and the Kherr-family of Aton Stud.”
“It’s quite unusual for me to experience such kind of help and you don’t need to do that,” Calleigh answered and also smiled. “So, thank you very much and please let me know if I can do something for you in return.”
“Yeah, there is a thing you can do for me,” Erin laughed. “Stay happy with your lieutenant, Calleigh.”
