Hey, I'm back! Finally!
Ok, this will be a rather unpleasant discussion and maybe even more for the one who wanted to take place! Oh I don't know, you tell me! At the very least the journey is over! Right on time because I was getting seasick actually! ;D
I hope (as always) you'll enjoy!
Chapter 8
Horatio followed Jethro at his cabin having absolutely no idea what his friend wanted to talk about. Jethro from his side was thinking how to approach the subject with subtlety. He was many things but, as everyone knew, subtle wasn’t one of them. They entered his cabin.
‘Take a seat Horatio. I’ll be right back.’
‘What is it, Jethro? You’ve been turning all cryptic at your old age.’ It was meant to be a joke, but turning around to see his friend, he saw a tired face and a sad look. Never the less, the Captain came to sit next to him, bringing two glasses and a bottle of whiskey, first pouring some at Horatio’s glass and then to his. He never was one to turn around the subject so he cut to the chase immediately.
‘What are you doing Horatio?’ The sudden question surprised the redhead and couldn’t find the hidden meaning of it.
‘What do you mean?’
‘Have you figured what you want or not yet?’ Jethro could see that Horatio had no idea what he was talking about. ‘Helene and her sister.’
‘What about them?’ He had started to realize where this was going but he needed to put his thoughts in order before answering.
‘Caine, you’re no stupid! Firstly, Helen is not Marisol…’ seeing that he was ready to disagree about something Jethro raised his hand to cut him off. ‘Listen to me! For one time listen to someone other than yourself. Secondly, Helen is going to married Raymond, right? Right! So why are you putting yourself through everything when you know there’s not going to be any result.’
Horatio knew that his friend was right, Raymond’s and Helene wedding didn’t stick all that much in his mind; the comparison between Marisol and Helene did though. Was that all he was seeing at the Greek woman? He couldn’t believe that, but even if that was the case, truth was he was going to stay by her side until she was safe with Ray. After that, he could return to his lonely life. His thoughts we interrupted by Jethro.
‘And there is Stella.’ His stomach clenched when he heard Stella’s name from the Captain. What was going on between the two of them? And most importantly why did he care?
‘Do you like Stella, Jethro?’ The question was out of his mouth before he had the time to think about it. His friend’s eyes lit at the question.
‘What’s there not to like? She’s a very beautiful, intelligent young woman!’ His words were said in a way that no contradiction was acceptable; and the truth was that Horatio didn’t want to disagree with him. He just didn’t like listening it from Jethro. His drink was burning his throat in a forgotten way or was it something else? Anger maybe? Towards who?
Gibbs kept staring at Hoatio wondering if he should be even blunter and chose against it. The last thing he wanted to do was to fight with Horatio and could see this conversation heading that way if he pushed the redhead more.
He got up from his sit and made himself a cup of strong coffee. Coffee helped him think. He heard his friend mumble.
‘What’s there not to like? The stubbornness? The independence?’ Jethro smiled unseeing by Horatio. Maybe he had succeeded in something and went for honesty.
‘You’re in dangerous waters here, Horatio. Think well and make your decision. You’re young and have a life to live! I don’t want you to end up like me.’ Jethro’s words both surprised and shocked Horatio because it was the first time he had heard him talking like that about himself. Losing Shannon and Kelly was hard to the older man, but everyone thought he had taken it well, or at least he was managing it. Apparently they were wrong. Seeing his friend for the first time, really seeing him, he understood how pained he was.
‘I’m sorry, Jethro!’
‘Everyone is. Don’t do to yourself what I did to mine!’
‘We’re in the same page here….’
‘No! We are NOT!’ Jethro’s intensity was inexplicable. They had both lost a wife and a kid. What was their difference? Before he had a time to respnd Jethro was out of the room leaving him alone to think about everything he had heard.
Jethro walked on the deck for a long time. He was going to do whatever he could to keep Stella and Horatio happy. Why? He couldn’t tell. It was the first time he had felt something for a woman, (was it friendship or something more he was going to dwell upon it) since his wife’s death and if he could do anything for her he would, even going against his friend’s wishes. After all Horatio was as confused as he was, if not more.
There was only one week left for their journey to end, not enough time to plan, but he had lots of time until his next journey to put his thoughts into action.
The last week passed quicker than Helene wanted, but slower for Stella. The trip wasn’t doing anything good on her nerved so the moment she saw land was the happiest in a long time. The first person that happened to be there that moment was Horatio and he was surprised to find his arms full of an excited Stella. He hugged her back and laughed to her childlike enthusiasm.
‘Finally! We’re here’, she said.
‘Yes; he agreed. ‘Let’s see what happens now!’ was the two-meaning reply she got.
