Chapter Five: Worried Yet?
Horatio was alone - as he stood he couldnt think of anything more he could do for his team.. the family he'd developed over so many years..He pulled out his cellphone and was tempted to call Calleigh and have her meet him somewhere.. but instead he just set it down beside him instead. What was he going to say he wondered....
His phone rang just as soon as he'd set it down.. he picked it up and looked at the Caller ID.. It was the doctors office... Quickly he answered.
"Hello..this is Lieutenant Caine." he murmured.
"Hello Horatio - this is James Wilson. Your Oncologist." he murmured lightly.
Horatio sighed - "Yes doctor?"
"Well - I looked over your reports... I'm your new doctor.. and well there's something that isnt noted in this file.." he murmured. "There's a side note about childhood trauma... but nothing more" he said explaining and accusing at the same time.
Horatio took a deep breath... Another person who would have to know.. "Uhm, Do you want me to come in..?" he asked. He sighed and shook his head.
Dr. Wilson looked at the file and then spoke again. "Yes- I'm afraid the Cancer is a little more serious than we thought- Mr. Caine."
Horatio took a deep breath. "Lieutenant." he said and could hardly speak again.. "Alright."
Dr. Wilson tried to offer him help - but he realized that there was not much they could do. "Lieutenant - Your going to have to stay over night - if the reevaluation goes the way I think it will go." he murmured..
Horatio just sighed on the edge of tears. "Alright.." he said again and hung up the phone.
--------------------
Horatio drove to the hospital - wondering why he'd been given a new doctor.. he'd ask no doubt. He walked in - checked in and waited for James Wilson to call him back into the room. He looked around - didnt feel like a cop for the first time in his life... even with the skills and knowledge he had - he felt like a civilian.
He looked around and saw women trying to shush their babies.. children running around the waiting room... he wondered what he was doing there... if even with the Cancer, he should be there... he realized that when Marisol had been diagnosed with it - the only thing they could do for her was put her on Khemo, and he wasnt about to do that. Even if it saved his life.
Dr. Wilson walked out into the waiting room and personally lead Horatio back. "I was transferred here from New Jersey." he said and almost laughed thinking about his work partner Gregory House. "They needed me down here." he said trying to keep light conversation.
Horatio just nodded finally getting his answer without even having to work for it. "Thats interesting.." he murmured. "I've heard all about Greg House." he said and laughed too.
Dr. Wilson looked back at his follower.. "Oh really hmm?" he said and offered another laugh. He lead Horatio to one of the back back rooms. Closed the door when Horatio walked inside. "I'll be back in one moment." he said.
Horatio pondered walking out - leaving - he didnt want to be there, hated doctors ever since he'd gone the first time after he'd been raped by his father. He sighed, the smell made his nostrils flare - and he could tell a hint of the last person who'd been in the room - Perfume - he'd taught himself to smell - sometimes it helped to be a CSI.. for weird reasons, he almost laughed at himself.... Started wondering where he'd be if he wasnt a cop.. and the answer came quickly. Dead.
Dr. Wilson came back into Horatio's room and stood looking at him. "Now - we need to reexamine your body - X-ray's the latter - so I'm going to set up for you to be X-rayed and then set up some dates for you to get an MRI and a CAT Scan. I hope that isnt a problem?"
Horatio only shook his head- It didnt bother him... he was already on medical leave from work - "Thank you Doctor" he murmured and watched as Dr. Wilson dissipeared outside again.
A nurse walked into Horatio's room and noticed he was still carrying a pistol. "Sir, Your uhm.. going to have to take that off.." she said- and looked directly into Horatio's eyes.
Horatio sighed and waited a beat. "I cant leave it here...I'll take it with me." he said and shifted his weight not trusting her. He never did. He sighed and followed her to the X-ray area. He put the pistol down on the table in the room. So he could keep his eye glued to it..
The nurse led him around and to the machine.. "Now lay down.. Mr. Caine." she said and started up the machine.
Horatio sighed, "I'm going to have to take my shirt off arent i?" he asked.. "Its lieutenant." he added.
The woman sighed. "Yes Lieutenant." she was about twenty minutes until she was off shift, and she just wanted to go home. "Are you really a cop?" she asked him out of nowhere. She was young, curious.
Horatio just smiled lightly remembering his job, his duty. "Yes.. I run the Miami Dade - Crime Lab." he said.
She smiled at him and lay his head lightly down. "Alright now - take a deep breath and hold it." she sighed, and walked out of the room.
Horatio lay, vulnerable again. He had already taken his shirt off, and the texture of the table he lay on was cold as hell. He was curious though- the X-ray machine reminded him too much of the lab. Somewhere he promised he wouldnt leave unless he was dead. He heard the click of the X-ray being taken.
The nurse walked back in the room to adjust the machine to another angle. "Your doing fine Lieutenant." she murmured lightly.
Horatio had to laugh... she told him he was doing good like a kid. "Hah.. some wouldnt think so." he said lightly and closed his eyes resting his hands on his chest for a moment.
The nurse quickly moved them when she noticed.. and lay them at his sides. "Alright two more." she murmured and walked back out of the room. "Deep breath Lieutenant." she murmured.
Horatio complied and inhaled his breath. Holding it. The machine clicked again and he expelled his breath.
The nurse walked back in. "Alright.. now wait one moment let me make sure we got what we need." she said. She walked back out...
Horatio was already sitting up. He pulled his shirt back on and walked to the pistol - his service pistol. The same pistol that had taken his fathers life. He wasnt a cop unless he carried it. He wasnt human - or himself unless it was at his waist. Nor without his shield. He sighed, and stood up shaking his legs trying to feel more comfortable.
The nurse walked back in and smiled. "Lieutenant I think we're alright now- this should be enough, Dr. Wilson will want to go over them with you." she murmured and lead him back to his room.
Horatio walked inside. Moved to lay back down on the bed where he was. He lay down and watch as the nurse walked back out of the room. He inhaled deep and exhaled... Closed his eyes... and started thinking about Marisol... and how badly he missed her. Then behind closed eyes he saw her, laying with him on that bed... saline tears now coated his cheeks.
Marisol.. My love..[/b] he thought to himself. He wanted her back so badly... wanted to redo what he'd done, he felt like it was his fault she was dead, and he knew it was. He rolled over onto his side, and slowly fell asleep while waiting.....
