Ok, so I thought that I’d have a go at a summary of this episode for those that haven’t had the chance to watch it yet…
Please beware that this is a description of exactly what happened in the episode - if you don't wanna know then please don't read it!! A guy working for the forestry department is out taking readings of pollution of algae in the Everglades, and as Horatio (very nicely) puts it; “getting technical” with a pretty young lady.
There’s a rustling in amongst the bushes…is it a black panther? Nope. A well built guy stumbles out of the undergrowth and promptly collapses on the poor professor. The dead guy is Vince Koslov, an extreme fighter who moved to America from Russia, won a few fight titles and then faded away…until now. Vince has been stabbed repeatedly in the abdomen.
At the post-mortem Tara Price (Miami’s new M.E.) drains his stomach and finds a piece of human flesh with a stag tattoo on it. And from the look of the tattoos they find on Vince’s body he’s involved in the Russian Mob.
Calleigh and Eric are back in the ‘Glades looking for their primary crime scene – they find it along with another dead man; Andrew Brodsky, who’s evidently the source of the flesh in Vince’s stomach. A diver’s knife lies nearby – it seems like an open and shut case: Vince bites Andrew’s neck, severing his carotid artery and in return Andrew stabs Vince. It’s never that simple in Miami! Andrew’s hands are covered in sticky fighters’ resin but there’s no sign of resin on the nearby knife proving that Andrew hasn’t touched the weapon.
Eric fumes the knife and find a print on the hilt. The print leads to Greg Donner who runs ‘Diver Tech Supply’ a diving supply company. Greg remembers selling a knife to a “smokin’ hot girl” that morning and happily provides her phone number.
Cassandra Grey(I think that’s her name) confesses to murdering Vince Koslov as soon as she’s asked. Horatio doesn’t buy it – a 230lb fighter against a slim woman – she can’t have done it alone!
A quick glance through Cassie’s phone while she’s in booking reveals she was actually Andrew Brodsky’s girlfriend. Further questioning shows that she didn’t know that Vince had ripped Andrew’s throat out – a fact which she surely couldn’t have missed if she had been there.
A quick swab of her hands shows that she’s not covering for someone, she’s running from the Russian Mob.
Seeing as the Vince was a fighter Frank Tripp has been looking at all the fight clubs in Miami and has found one that’s Russian owned. The owner is Ivan Sarnoff.
It’s time for another H magic trick and this time he’s got a glamorous assistant…(ok, it’s actually Ryan) Horatio and Ryan appear in the middle of a fight cage and Wolfe runs in to stop a fighter beating his opponent into a pulp. To one side of the fighting cage the CSIs find tattoo equipment and the tracing used as the outline for Andrew Brodsky’s stag tattoo. And underneath a mat Ryan uncovers a dry blood pool.
The blood is from Nathan Madden, who was reported missing by his wife recently. Horatio and Eric pay Nathan’s wife a visit at their home; a boat in the marina. The last time Mrs Madden saw her husband he was having an argument with one of Sarnoff’s men and told her that ‘he wouldn’t let anyone take their home away’.
Calleigh finds out that in the past few months 12 of the boat slips at the marina (which are worth millions of dollars and have a 30 year waiting list to get one) have been sold for just $10,000 each to the Kubalo Corporation. It’s just a legitimate front for an extortion racket.
The team find the boat that Nathan Madden took off in after his confrontation with Sarnoff’s goon. There’s blood on the outer hull of the boat consistent with Andrew Brodsky’s cause of death. Ryan finds show prints in the boat that prove Greg Donner (owner of ‘Dive Tech Supply’) was on the boat and therefore at the crime scene.
When confronted with the truth Greg can’t keep quiet; he admits that he’s involved with the Russian Mob, that he had Vince kill Andrew by biting out his throat and then Greg killed Vince, because he was becoming a liability.
Greg reveals that Nathan Madden was challenged to a fight at Sarnoff’s fight club in order to keep his slip at the marina. He lost his fight and his life too. So while he was dying Greg stole the keys to his boat.
Horatio goes back to Cassandra Grey – she admits that she confessed to the murder because she thought she was safer in police custody than she was on the street where the mob would surely kill her. She was meeting Andrew (her boyfriend) at the fight club and saw Nathan Madden’s body being dumped. Andrew should have killed Cassie to make sure she couldn’t talk about what she’d seen, but he couldn’t kill her (he loved her, awww). Because he didn’t follow orders the Mob decided that Andrew had to die. Cassandra is entered into the US Marshall’s witness protection program.
Eric & Calleigh return to Sarnoff’s club and find Madden’s body – Eric dusts the body for latent prints. Which leads him straight back to Ivan Sarnoff.
Sarnoff orders one of his men to take the fall for a crime (that in my opinion) he committed.
Ivan: What is it you’re after?
Horatio: I’m after you Ivan, I’m gonna get you.
I don’t think this is the last we’re going to see of Ivan Sarnoff…not by a long shot. Which I’m quite pleased by actually – he seems like he might be a worthy opponent for our hero!
