In just 12 hours the Season 8 opener will be history. I hope the reviews get posted on this thread because Rake at the Gates put up the cast list here. It is always nice to have that to refer to in case we forget what role each actor is playing. Horatio is played by whom? Hmmm, just let me check that out here . . . . (AS IF)!!

While Bill and Hillary Clinton were attending the funeral of Princess Diana in London, it was murder and mayhem in Miami as usual. This episode lived up to its hype all the way. For me it was absolutely the best story I have sat through in a long time.
In present time, we have the team looking for Delko in the Everglades. He suffered a bullet wound to the brain (at Calleigh's hands) and was trying to make it to the road before he collapsed. He was found there and rushed to the hospital. All team members eventually gathered around him as we see how Calleigh, Alexx, and Horatio react during his surgery. Post surgery finds Horatio at Eric's bedside and those moments were incredibly powerful. The little clip we have been viewing only did partial justice to Caruso's Big Moment.
While unconscious, Eric flashes back 12 years and this is where the murder plot unfolds. We have what appears to be a straight forward "husband shoots wife in a fit of anger" plot and Horatio's old-school, gumshoe type detective has circumstansial evidence galore that will convict him. But Horatio is bothered about several things and goes about proving his point with the help of Jesse Cardoza (Eddie Cibrian) who has only a few hours left on his job. We see Horatio in suit and tie with a mop of golden hair, squinting through the Miami sun, welcoming Calleigh warmly, telling Frank he'll try to get him a computer, arguing with both his partner and his boss, and showing sympathy to the husband whom he must prove innocent. of the crime. He has an immediate rapport with Delko, who drives a towtruck and notices his logical reasoning skills. When Eric finds the gun in the marsh, Horatio urges him to go attend the police academy. Eric has been disappointed before and it is a great mark of trust in Horatio when he decides to check it out. Of course they saved the fun moment for the end. Eric has been trying to find Horatio just the right pair of shades throughout the episode and comes up with the perfect pair in time for the last scene. It was a bit of silliness to be sure (Horatio could have bought his own sunglasses) but it works because Eric was so persistent and Horatio was so gracious about it.
While make-up artists and technical gurus succeeded in making Horatio look 12 years younger, they did not make David Caruso look like he looked 12 years ago. And that's a fact!
We got a glimpse of Natalia who was working in a federal lab where DNA needed to be established, and we glimpsed Ryan and Frank at Eric's bedside.
Next week it's Horatio in cevlar as a hostage situation develops within the lab.

Karen, would you agree that there was more humor than normal? I certainly found myself laughing more than I have since perhaps season 2.
And, by the way...did you catch the receding skyline during one of the transitions between 2009 and 1997? I rewound it to watch it 3 times--What a cool effect!

Wow! I enjoyed it! I REALLY enjoyed how H got his shades, and loved when he first put them on. It was really awesome that they went back to the beginning to show how the team got together, I had always wanted to see it.
Next week looks great! We get a new and hot cop (He is really cute) and we see H dressed up for a hostage situation! Looking forward to it.

Karen, your review of the episode was as excellent as the episode itself!
I loved the entire episode and I could go on and on about it, but for the moment, I'd like to mention one thing, and this may sound a bit off, but FRANK! Did you guys notice Frank?! He looked exactly like he did in Rush Hour! I sat there and laughed and laughed I missed what was being said in that scene!
OK, enough of that! Back to Horatio...I just thought his performance was stellar, every scene was excellent and I can't wait for tomorrow when I can watch it OnDemand again! He was so....involved. With everything. Got to love that man!

Oh, I noticed Frank all right. My girlfriend and I already have an antire backstory for his mustache. In fact, it's its own character, now, along with Duchess, the scent dog from the first season finale.
Sorry, had to get that out there. I really have no way of describing how much I loved the episode, especially DC's scenes. I was worried about how implausibly Jesse Cordoza would be introduced, but it was actually pretty mellow and realistic.
Besides, an ep with retro!Natalia and no Ryan? Always a winner. (Sorry, Ryan! Hahaha...)

Well they said it would be "back to basics"....so that would also mean more humour, as there was more bantering and teasing the 1st few seasons. Fabulous review Karen. Hope you will continue writing them this season again...... Sandra

Well I can't do anything more but agree with the others. This was one hell of an episode. I loved it. So nice to see how the team got together and how Horatio became a CSI. It fitted to his trivia that he got bored of the normal police work, not to forget frustrated with it and that in his eyes, the science is the real force that can put man behind bars. The whole episode I was sitting here and asking myself where Speed is.. and thank God he was mentioned in the end. Phew.. It all makes perfect sense and fits, as long as you don't think about the very first trivia of the characters. But that's all right.. as long as it makes sense now. And Frank with a mustache.. OH MY GOD I so had to laugh about it. And the sunglasses must have been a running gag between Eric and Horatio even before this episode.. or that's at least how I understood their first dialog. Jess
