OK it’s summer, Horatio & his team are on vacation, so I decided to create another Horatio who lived in early 1920s. I got the inspiration by the last fanart challenge; Horatio/Stella. Of course is a very different Stella as well. I have to admit it’s also inspired by one of Margaret’s wonderful wallpapers with Horatio & Stella!
I’m not fond of making people wait (unless I don’t have anything written, you know), so I think I’m going to start posting today that it’s my Birthday, as a big THANK YOU to all of you who remembered me!
I hope you’ll enjoy!
Two worlds.
Prologue
Early 1920s north Greece
Helene stood in front of her favourite sea trying to hide the tears that were running from her eyes. This was the last week she had to spend in her beautiful place with people she loved. With the man she thought she would have spent the rest of her life with. She had been wrong and now she had to pay the prize, both she and her love Pavlos.
Stella was watching her older sister from afar trying to understand how she felt; how could their family be so cruel as to send her away, in another country to marry a man she didn’t know. Needless to be added Helene didn’t even speak the language. Thus, she had to go with her, for a while until she could get used of her new life. That’s how things were, the chosen man was rich and Helene would have a good life by his side; a good but a loveless one since she was already in love with her childhood friend. Stella knew how unfair life was to her older sister but still she tried to make her see the good things in her future. And then Helene would turn her tear streaked eyes to her and she’d keep her mouth shut.
Their family was a rich one considering the state Greece was after World War I, but still its power had deteriorated and it would have been extremely difficult for the girls to get married in their own place. Helene was never into reading; she was a great housekeeper and a sewing maid, she knew everything a young Lady of her age should have known and she was the perfect candidate for the New Yorker who owned at Stella’s and Helene’s father a great sum of things. And so the agreement had been made.
Their father knew that Helene loved someone else, but his older daughter’s looks and behaviour was al lot meeker than his younger one. Stella had lived in a monastery for 6 years in where she had studied to become a teacher and she also had the opportunity to learn English as well. She was their small village’s teacher and despite being brought up among nuns she wasn’t one to take kindly any kind of order. Marrying her with the American was unthinkable and wouldn’t have worked any way. Stella was the boy his family never had, way to strong head-ed for her own good.
Stella went to her sister and hugged her. It was the week before Easter and they both knew after Christ’s Resurrection, it would come the time for their long journey.
‘How am I going to do it, Stella?’
‘We will do it together. I’ll be there to take care of you until you settle in and then a time will come that you not only won’t need me there but you will not want me either.’ Stella tried to give courage to her sister and really she saw a smile at Helene’s beautiful eyes.
‘Best thing, Stella, is that you’ll be with me… not alone!’ she said as she hugged her sister even tighter and thought of their future. ‘Just don’t expect to let you go that easy… or so soon!’
Meanwhile in another seaside a red-haired man was thinking about his last five years and the loneliness that was his constant company; not that he wanted anything different. After spending five years in his home estate in Ireland and a whole year touring at Europe’s major cities, he was almost ready to return home; almost but not certain. The pain was still there, the wound was open and bleeding even after all these years. But his return to home was a clear necessity now that his younger brother needed him. Where had he got himself this time, he couldn’t help but wonder. Suddenly a female voice interrupted his musing.
“Horatio..” he turned to look at the beautiful woman with a fake tired smile!
‘Hello, Natalia. Where is Eric?’ that was always his first question, which caused her bright smile to disappear from her otherwise open and friendly face. He knew she was good and he knew it was her mistake to marry someone she didn’t love, but he was determined to keep their marriage alive and strong; it was clear by the young woman’s attitude Horatio was the one holding the key to that marriage success.
‘Hmmm, well, he is somewhere around showing that new assistant of his the way to use a camera!’ Her reply showed clearly how much she liked Eric’s new protégé, and Horatio smiled as he recognized her jealousy. Not even Natalia knew how much she really loved her husband. He, on the other hand, believed Maxine, Eric’s charge, was a lovely, charming, young woman, ready to sponge anything her teacher was telling her. It was really amazing that she wanted to become a photographer and his brother in law was always ready to help. They were both really talented as far as photography was concerned and Maxine de Valera had the extra advantage –for a woman- of a nice education and exceptional beauty.
Horatio took his eyes away from the sea and asked Natalia to return to their hotel, find Eric and Maxine and enjoy their last days visiting the ancient sights of Greece.
