FYI - I am going on a short road trip. I will be gone for a few days so you will have to just read the other story lines for now. I will see if my muse is working better when I get back.
Have a great day.

still a bit of a block going on but I put on ZZ Top and punched this one out. The last few paragraphs were set up with the Who playing title song of our favorite show. Please enjoy as always.
Year 5 Month 1, 2, 3
As with the previous winter the school days were scheduled from mid morning until mid afternoon. There was a difference in that there was a nursery built to accommodate the teachers that had small children. This allowed the mothers that came to help with the teaching to be included in the activities that were at the school.
Julie James had set up a number of art projects for students and the community to get involved in. She had plays and costume design, stage hands and makeup artist, pottery classes, painting both in oil and water color, and all types of sewing classes. All these projects were coordinated into the art building that she ran and took care of the supplies. She not only set them up but found the people to teach the classes as well. We were lucky to have her. She oversaw all the art and entertainment for the community. When she went to New Washington she always made sure that there were projects going on and a schedule posted for everyone to see what had been planned.
Horatio and I were still teaching. But we both now wore a side arm at all times. I had not taken up wearing a suit to class. Horatio added to his he now had his old MDPD badge snapped beside his holster and his sunglasses were either on his face or he had them hung around his neck. When he was in front of the class giving the lesson he would often stand with his hands on his hips. On Saturdays you would find him at the shooting range. He told me that he never wanted to be caught with his guard down again. Frank, Eric and Ryan would often join him on his Saturday morning self training exercises.
Many a times after their trip to the rifle range the boys would come back to our place and spend another hour in the BOYS shed. Where they would smoke their cigars and talk about the old times. This seemed to help them cope with the life that they were leading not by choice but because it was what was left after the war. We women were a different lot. Because no matter when or where you put done roots a woman’s lot was pretty much the same.
They all loved their wives and their new families, but they missed Florida sunshine year round and in the winter it was very hard for them. Eric would often be heard to say. “I never thought I would say that I miss the gators. But you know H I do miss those scaly creatures.” One day during their trip to the BOYS shed Col. Degustie came by and told the boys that the next spring the USS TICONDEROGA battle ship was going to make a run down to the gulf coast states and see how bad the damage was. They were asking for volunteers that had lived in the coastal cities before the war that would be willing to go on a sea voyage of one month and his first thought had been of the MDPD people in the valley.
No one spoke as Rick was talking about the USS TICONDEROGA and her assignment by Pres James to take a look at what resources were left to us. His first thoughts had been to ask Horatio’s former team, but had decided to send the message with Rick and give them a chance to say no. Horatio looked at each of his friends and former colleges. He then turned to Rick and said. “We all will sign up and I do believe I know of a few more that will want to go on the trip. Give me a day or two to give you a list of the names.”
After Rick left the boys their little meeting broke up. They made sure all the cigars were out before they left and as Horatio was the last out the door he made one more quick look around the room to be sure there was nothing amiss. He smiled to himself as he began to think about going home even if it were for just a quick look see trip. Yes Miami would always be home, even if Miami was no longer there as a busy city metropolis.
He began to walk toward the house he saw Lightning playing a tag game with Dragon out in the field. He laughed out loud as he saw the big cat spring up out from behind a large snow drift and Dragon rear up on his hind legs and paw at the air. It appeared that the two were dancing. He continued on to the back door of his house, he knew that Kate and Lin Woo were inside making dinner. He walked in the door and Lin Woo turned from the kitchen counter and pointing at him with the wooden spoon that she was using told him. “You been in boys’ shed smoking cigar. Go take clothes off and bath before I let you eat my cooking.”
I was walking into the kitchen as she said this and met him as he crossed the floor. I put my arms around his neck and he pulled me into a bear hug and gave me a kiss. When he released me I looked closely at him. “What canary have you just eaten Mr. Cat’s Meow?” He raised and lowered his eye bows. “I’ll tell you and Lin Woo at dinner.” He smiled and gave me a kiss on the cheek and went to do as Lin Woo had told him.
That night at the dinner table he told us about the planned trip down to Miami and that the President wanted his team to go and they had accepted. It would mean that he would be gone for a month and would I be alright with that? The ship wasn’t going to go until June which would be the middle of the summer months. The new addition to our family would keep me from going and he wanted to know how I felt about his leaving so soon after the birth.
I looked at him and began to laugh. “You have already decided to go and I don’t think anything save death its’ self would keep you off that ship when it leaves the harbor of New Washington.” I leaned over and kissed him. “I will make it through one month with a little stress; just don’t make it much longer than that.”
Lin Woo had gotten very quite and we looked at her. Horatio tilted his head as he asked. “Are you alright with this?” Lin Woo looked down at her hands that lay folded in her lap and thought before she spoke to Horatio. She looked up and then she said the most amazing thing. “I think that Miss Kate should go too. If new baby is on bottled milk I can take care of her and Matthew until you return.” She then looked at Lightning for a moment. “You go too Lightning keep them safe.” As if in answer to her Lightning chirped. So it was decided in our house that Horatio, Lightning and myself would go.
The Wolfe family only Ryan would go on the trip as Calleigh had duties as the representative for our community in New Washington. Both the Delkos were going, Lilly Bearcheif was keeping their offspring. Twomoons was going with the group. Gladys said that she would help out with Lilly and Lin Woo. So the list was planned; Horatio, Kate, Ryan, Eric, Natalia, Twomoons, Frank and Lightning. The Magnifcint Seven + one; Horatio sent the message to Pres. James.

Sorry about the delay of this chapter. My muse has been missing of late. I will try to be more kind to you guys and get another chapter to you in a more timely manner. I found the muse but I need to give it a few swift kicks to get it jump started. So bear with me and enjoy this one.
Year 5 Months 4, 5 & 6
After Horatio sent the message to Pres. James he heard back that the captain of the battleship was of the mind that women did not belong on his ship or any other ship that was a ship of war. He thought that a woman’s place was in the home or at least on land. They had no business on a war ship at sea. But that he believed in the Constitution of the United Sates and he answered to his commander and chief’ the President of the United States. So if the President ordered him he would take women on his battleship. But he was going to give strict orders that they were to stay out of his way.
When Pres. James was told that we planned on taking the cheetah with us, he had laughed for some time. He contacted Horatio to tell him about the captain and then told him that in these hard times he needed to laugh more. He could hardly wait for his group to get to New Washington and be introduced to the captain. Horatio laughed when he got the call back from Pres. James. “Wait till he sees Lightning. If he has problems with women what is he going to say about my girl thingy cat?” Both men seemed to get real pleasure from the discomfort that this would cause for a certain captain.
Capt. Rabb and the Enterprise had left just before winter had set in to go to the west cost. He was then to steam on to Hawaii and check out the islands. He would not be back until the following winter. But he had told Horatio that while they were in the Gulf that he should pay a visit to a certain man in Havana, Cuba that would give supplies to the ship and if he mentioned Capt. Rabb he would be sure to be supplied with enough cigars to last him and the boys until the Enterprise docked back in New Washington the following winter.
Most of the rest of the winter the M7+1 held meetings and began to put together what they felt they would need when they once again were in Miami. We knew that many MDPD vehicles that had been left behind and that some may give them a means of transportation if the cars had not been stripped by people that were left in the area. We had sent a message to the USS TICONDEROGA to ask if they would be willing to transport on horses and their gear. It was a few days before they got word back to inform them as to the accommodations that would be given to them.
One day the US Marine detachment came to the school room looking for H. As the young corporal came in he spotted the mayor in one of the classrooms. He was at the front of the room telling the students about the importance of the US Constitution. Why it was important that they learn about it and how it set up the nation for us to live in even now after the 2 day war. The young Marine corporal stepped into the room and walked directly up to the mayor. “Sir, I have Capt. J. J. Johanas of the USS TICONDEROGA on the radio demanding to talk with you. He is in a tizzy about the information he has received on the people and animals that are in the group that you want to bring aboard his battleship. I think you need to take the call, sir.”
Horatio smiled and tilted his head and turned so that he was standing sideways to the corporal when he spoke, “And so the posturing begins.” He put his sunglasses on and started for the door. “Class I will have another teacher here for you in a moment. Please open your materials to page 55 and read until the teacher comes.” He walked out with the corporal and went to the Marine detachment’s base of operation.
As he walked into the small room that housed the radio he could hear the captain of the USS TICONDEROGA yelling at the young corporal that was at the radio. “What does this Horatio Caine think I am running Noah’s Ark? I will not have cheetahs and horses and what ever other animal he plans on bringing with him.”
Horatio walked up to the radio and put on a pair of head sets. “Capt. Johanas I presume. This is Horatio Caine, mayor of New Hope and leader of the M7+1 group that is going to go have a look at Miami and what is left in Florida that may be of use to the US. Also see if there are any groups there that can be formed into working communities.” Before the Captain could reply Horatio went on. “I know that it will be inconvenience to have animals and women on your ship. Unfortunately I will need all the members of my team as they have skills that will be useful in going about the business that the President wants us to do. The horses will be used in place of gasoline vehicles and of course we will need some pack animals. We may be able to fine some transportation down there but more than likely we will need to provide our own. As to the cheetah, he is one very good tracking animal. Better than a lot of dogs. He is also loyal to me and has proven himself worthy to go on the foray. I also could not leave him behind while I am gone on this long of a trip. He is not completely tame. In that he is still a hunter and I have tried not to hand feed him except when it has been necessary. I have kept the numbers on my team down to the minimum. As you know there were many who volunteered for the foray. I chose only the most valuable of personal.”
There was a short silence from the other end of the radio contact. Then Capt. Johanas bellowed at Horatio. “Your people will muck up after the animals while they are on my ship. That cheetah will have to be in a cage and the women need to keep out of my way and not interrupt the duties of the men on my ship.”
Horatio smiled and replied back. “We always muck up after ourselves and as far as women keeping out of you way that shouldn’t be too hard for them. As to my putting Lightning in a cage that will not happen.”
Capt Johanas took a deep breath and retorted. “Then I will assign yeomen to walk with that animal 24/7 and they will be armed. They will have orders to shoot that cat if he is not kept in line.” Horatio smiled at the thought of Lightning having an escort for the entire voyage. Yes to say the least this foray was going to be most interesting and very long.
