;D
Well, I have another one for you guys to enjoy. Hopefully I can get another chapter tomorrow. But this is the opener.
Chapter 1
Dr. Gladys Joyce Brighten had been accepted at the Jackson Memorial Hospital as chief of surgery. She had called the moving company to pick up her household and packed her clothes and put them in her Patriot Blue Pearl Coat Dodge Ram 2500 quad cab with off white leather interior. This was her pride and joy. This was the one item that she had allowed herself to buy because it was exactly what she wanted not just because she needed it. She set her On Star information to get to Miami, Florida and she stopped at the gas station that she always used and topped of her double tanks. Then she said good-by to Houston, Texas and her old life with her ex-husband and all his family.
It took her less than a week to get to Miami and find a small apartment not to far from the hospital. She had called the moving company and given them the address and they had shown up two days before she was suppose to join the staff for the first time. This gave her two days to put her house together.
She did it in record time. She was putting the last touches on the small bathroom when her cell phone began to ring. She blew at the strand of auburn hair out of her face and let the shower curtain drop into the tub. Walking into the living room she picked up the phone and looked at the caller ID. It was the hospital number that showed up on the cell.
She opened the phone and answered. “This is Dr. Brighten, how may I be of help?”
The voice on the other end of the line answered. “Dr. Brighten we know that you aren’t due to report in until tomorrow but we have a need of yours service tonight. If you wouldn’t mind coming in right now, we could use you in surgery. We have had a major pile up on the 821. Two high school buses were involved and 30 other cars and trucks. We are calling in all surgeons and staff members.”
“Not a problem for me. I am only a few miles away and I don’t have to use that highway to get there.” With this said she snapped her phone shut and looked at what she had on. She was in the same clothes that she had on yesterday. She walked into the unfinished bathroom and stripped off her clothes, finished hanging the shower curtain and took a quick shower. Then walked into the main bedroom and grabbed up a set of matching lime green lace underwear and bra. Turned to the closet and pulled out a light green pant suit and put it on. She then grabbed her standard working shoes; white nurses shoes. She then headed to the front door grabbing up her keys on the way. She only stopped long enough to lock her front door.
She arrived at the hospital emergency doors 25 minutes later. As she walked in she found a scene of controlled chaos. She walked to the desk and showed the person on duty her drivers’ license. “I am the new chief of surgery as of tomorrow, but I got a call out for the emergency. Where do I find a locker and scrubs?” She was directed to the doctors’ lounge and told where to get scrubs and she found a locker and put her purse and keys in it. Pulling out a combination lock she attached it to the locker and walked back to the ER.
She walked up to a gurney that held a man who looked to be a little over six foot tall with a balding head and he was reading his chart. She reached over and took the chart away from him. “You know only a doctor is supposed to read this. Are you a doctor?”
“No, I’m a cop. But I’ve read enough medical information to know that I ain’t hurt that bad. Just got a broken left leg. You just slap a cast on it and I’m out of here.” It was about then that his cell phone began to ring. “Tripp here, H; what can I do for you?” There was a pause. “That might be a little hard for me to do I was in the pile up on 821.” Another pause and a smile appeared on his lips. “I won’t be driving home in my new car anytime soon.”
Gladys reached over and took the phone from him. Putting it to her ear she spoke to the person on the other end. “Mr. H this is Dr. Brighten and Mr. Tripp is going to have a cast put on a leg fracture and you can come pick him up in about 45 minutes. What you can’t do is stay on a cell phone with him in the hospital.” She then closed the phone and handed back to Mr. Tripp; who was beginning to laugh. “Dr. Brighten you just hung up on the wrong person.”
“Let me worry about that when he gets here. Right now I am going to get you down to orthopedics and get this leg set so that your friend can take you home. We just are not going to have enough room to put you up.” She then turned and grabbing an orderly she gave him directions to take Mr. Francis Tripp to get a cast put on his leg. She then began to sort through the injured and do some triage with those that were begin brought in. She quickly forgot about Francis Tripp and got on with the business at hand.
As she turned from a young high school cheer leader with a head wound she came face to face with a tall red head who had piercing blue eyes. “Are you Dr. Brighten? The same Dr. Brighten who hung up Det. Tripp’s phone and told me not to contact him on it while he was in the hospital?”
